Since the early days of air force service in Minooka, Illinois, members of the military have been providing gifts to their fellow servicemen and women. Today, gift history is an important part of airforce culture and tradition in this community. In 1948, the Illinois Air National Guard was activated as a provisional unit in order to provide support for the United States Strategic Air Command (USSTRATCOM). The Minooka-based Kirtland AFB was chosen to serve as home base for the new unit. The provisional unit soon became an integral part of USSTRATCOM. In 1951, the permanent squadron was activated at Kirtland AFB and named the 2d Bombardment Wing (2 BW). It was through this wing that Minooka residents first saw combat during the Korean War. In 1965, when USAF deploys its first operational group stationed at Minooka AFB - The 306th Tactical Missile Squadron (306 TMS) - gift giving becomes a norm withinMinooka society. Family and friends come together to share baskets filled with items such as paintings, books, toys, radios etc., all meant to commemorate one another's momentous occasion or just show their appreciation for being a part of something so amazing. The 306 TMS helped set up USAF missile ranges throughout central Illinois which continues today as part of STRATCOM’s nuclear deterrence role. The Air Force has always been a strong supporter of the Special Olympics. In 1992, the Air Force donated air force surplus equipment to help create a Special Olympics event in Colorado Springs. The next year, the Air Force again contributed air force surplus equipment to help support Special Olympics events in Phoenix and Albuquerque. In 1997, the Air Force donated an additional C-130 Hercules airplane to special needs athletes from San Diego. And in 2000, the Air Force donated another C-130 Hercules airplane to the Special Olympics in West Palm Beach, Florida. These donations have helped make theSpecial Olympics one of America's most successful annual events.
The Minooka Aviation Museum is a nonprofit aviation museum located in Minooka, Illinois. The museum was founded in 1984 by members of the town's Rotary Club. It became an official community institution in 1989. The museum has collection of aircraft from World War II to the present day, as well as memorabilia and air-to-air missiles from the Cold War.
Minooka, Illinois is a small town located in the southern part of the state of Illinois. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. The name Minooka means "place where there are many salmon" in local Hidatsa language. The first settler in what became Minooka was Wm. Fenton and his wife Nannie on September 15, 1837. They had come from Hannibal, Missouri. Mr. Fenton was a justice of the peace and County Treasurer for La Salle County before moving to Minooka with his family and begin operations as farmers. Wm., Jr., (William) Fenton married Lavina Bigham on October 5, 1851; they had six children: John Prentice (born October 12, 1852), Clarissa Covington (born January 7, 1855), George Washington Fenton (born December 17,1858), Hazel Covington(born November 10, 1860), Viola Belle Fenton(born May 6, 1862). John Prentice became an insurance agent and built one of the first two stores in MinOOKA when he opened it on Main Street in 1865 Mrs. Prentice later ran a store herself until her death in 1931 George Washington Fenton also became an insurance agent but left to become political commentator and author . Hazel Covington married Roy Laughlin who founded Laughlin's Steak House which still stands today on Old Court Road just east of Highway 509 . Viola Belle developed an unsuccessful factory business called "Viola Belle" which produced dolls for various companies until her death in 1951 . In 1973 Viva Belle's remains were interred at Elmwood Cemetery near by her husband’s grave

Minooka is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1872 on land given to it by the Illinois Central Railroad. The first settler in Minooka was John and Nancy Hanks. They arrived in 1872 and built a cabin on a hill overlooking the village today. They were followed by other settlers, including Captain Isaac Newton and his family who arrived in 1873. The name of the settlement came from Chief Osage's home territory near present-day Chicago Heights along the Milwaukee Road (now I-94). In 1876, Minooka became an incorporated village with a Mayor and Aldermen elected by residents only; however, this system lasted until 1893 when it was replaced by an open election system which still exists today. In 1902, when MinOOKA merged with neighboring Village of Highland Park to form one consolidated municipality under one mayor and three trustees, it became known as "Minooka Township" or simply "Minooka." In 1907 all township offices were moved from Highland Park to MinOOKA for convenience during annexation into Chicago due to growing population size within Cook County alone! The last resident left MinOOKA on October 15th 1986 after almost 100 years of continuous occupancy!
