Today, Minooka remains an agricultural center with a wide variety of crops including corn (maize), soybeans, wheat and rice. Some of the principal businesses in the community include agriculture-related firms such as Anheuser Busch Brewery and Sycamore Farms Dairy; general store chains like Sears Holdings Roebuck & Co., Albertsons Companies Inc., Kroger Co., Safeway Inc.; smaller businesses such as three churches (St Dominic Catholic Church - built in 1886; St John Lutheran Church - built in 1924; First Presbyterian Church - built in 1935); two schools (Minooka Elementary School and Holy Angels Roman Catholic School); and one hospital (St Joseph's Hospital). Minooka is a small town in north-central Illinois, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Minooka were French traders and explorers in the early 17th century. A fur trader, Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville, built a trading post on the present day site of Minooka in 1692-93. In 1819, General Anthony Wayne founded what is now Chicago as the capital of Illinois under the concept of a new nation called America. He named his new city after his old friend and Civil War general Winfield Scott Hancock (1775-1846). In 1827, Captain John Strode arrived with four bales of Indian corn from St Louis and laid down the first plat for what is now MinOOKA Township on February 11th (). There were no dwellings or businesses in this isolated corner of northwest Illinois when Strode came ashore. By 1830 there were twenty five families living here; most had been brought over by pioneers arriving during that decade following American victory over Mexico in 1821 at Cemex (now El Paso), Texas in the Mexican–American War (1821-24). One hundred years later, many residents still cite Captain John Strode as their ancestor when they reminisce about pioneer days hereabouts. The community’s name comes from an Old English word meaning “settlement near a stream” or “edge of wooded land between two streams where people could picnic” or just “plain place” according to one history book account dating back to 1865; although another source claims it was coined by Wm Halsey Young who christened it “Minniehooka” after his home town near Pittsburgh which he had visited while stationed at Fort Snelling playing poker with friends there before moving eastward into Minnesota Territory (present day Wisconsin) some time around 1840.). In 1861 local citizens decided that they needed more than just a store front so they built themselves two churches - oneMethodist and one Catholic - both becoming operational within 5 years! This village quickly became known as "the Village" because it housed everything from schoolhouses to churches all without any government assistance other than being self reliant! Prior to these institutions coming about it was primarily outlanders usingesteads along either side of current US Highway 9W leading south out into ghost country until finally reaching civilization again via stagecoach routes linking Prairie du Chien with Rockford en route to Springfield – thus perpetuating this rural outpost lifestyle well into our 21st century visits! With accurate records remaining back through thoseearly decades property values have gradually appreciated making MinOOKA today's 6th largest township by size alone NOT counting satellite locations like Palatine Heights etc… housing developments such asPalatine Hills/Northbrook/Beverlywood etc…. yet retaining much character & historical charm typical for these northwestern Illinienses !
The Minooka community was originally founded in 1877 by Swedish immigrants. The town was named after the Native American word "minka." The first store in the community opened in 1881. In 1899, the town incorporated and began to grow rapidly. By 1920, the population had reached 2,500 people. In 1951, Minooka became a city and continues to grow rapidly today with over 8,000 residents.
