Melrose Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name derives from the location of one of its three mills - two were destroyed by fire in 1872 and 1873, but the third continued operations until 1903. The first permanent settler in what is now Melrose Park was George Washington Buford who arrived with his family on June 7, 1814. He and his wife (future First Lady Martha Washington) founded a small cabin called Allens Mills on the west bank of the Chicago River near present-day Woodlawn Cemetery. Buford’s father had emigrated from England two years earlier and died shortly after arriving in America; George inherited his land along with some other property holdings including mill sites at Belmont and Montrose Roads in north suburban Elmhurst Township (now Roscoe Village). In addition to farming, early settlers also built small shops and homes around these mills which provided employment for many people during those early days before transportation became available to more widespread markets. By 1830 over sixty families lived within a radius of three miles (5 km) of all three mills: seventeen near Allens Mills themselves, thirteen near Belmont Road/Montrose Road, and five further east at Waukegan Avenue/Lake Street. By 1840 only twelve families still lived within that radius; six near Allens Mills alone, four at Belmont Road/Montrose Road, and two each at Waukegan Avenue/Lake Street and Roscoe Village. A period characterized by decreasing productivity due to competition from machine makers across the river led to increased production by all three mills between 1845-1848 when they became owned by brothers Amos Iversen & John Prentice Jr., under whom renamed their company American Manufacturing Company (AMC). However profits declined thereafter as faster machines made it difficult for firms to keep up with technological advances; firm ownership changed hands multiple times until 1870 when it passed into private hands once again becoming known as American Manufacturing Company Incorporated (AMPICO). During this time there were also numerous religious services conducted here including Methodist Episcopal Church which was organized in 1795 followed soon afterwards by Lutheranism; both denominations held services outdoors on large yards or campuses located nearby such as Chapin College where Reverend Julius Nygaard preached beginning in 1798 while an academy was being built just south of present day Woodlawn Cemetery off Wacker Drive next door to AMPICO’s main building – both were operated jointly until 1889 when Chapin College became independent.). One local historian has written that “themelrose park [was]a hamlet form[ing] out of several scattered farmhouses intermingling since earliest times with increasing density due mostly to cheap white labor imported through Great Britain during mid 1800s …the village center slowly formed as farmers subdivided their holdings into individual houses making larger dwellings possible without incurring too much debt” . In 1893–94 immigrants German Lutherans Johannes Fischer(Lutheran minister), Johann Friedrich Funk( pastor), Franziska Luchsinger(social worker), Martin Kühn(teacher) started construction on what would become Northwestern Memorial Hospital then known simply as Northwestern Memorial Hospital Incorporated . This hospital would serve patients fromWPKD TV station WBBM-TV based out of downtown Chicago before moving uptown to Milwaukee Avenue starting February 1st 1957 finally becoming Medical Center Of Illinois August 11th 1969 following Rush University Medical School merger

Melrose Park was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was located on the border of Cook and Kane counties. The population was 1,200 at the 2000 census. The Melrose Park post office closed in 1998. The name comes from two large oaks that grow near the town square. The first OAK (Old Ashtabula) oak tree was planted in 1868 by John Pemberton and is still standing today. The secondoak tree, which waspiped over in 1937 by Chicago Department of Transportation as part of a project to widen the road around the town square, has been renamed "Olive" after Olivetti's pasta sauce company based in Italy.. In 1892, physician Dr. Charles Fenton opened his own practice in what is now known as "Fenton Place". He soon became well-known for his innovations in medical care and for creating an early form of air conditioning that he called "Fenton's Fan". ThisDoctor had also started a nearby grocery store which would become one of Chicago's most successful business ventures during the 1920s and 1930s under another name: A&P Grocery Co., Ltd.. In 1951, Dr. Fenton retired from practicing medicine but continued to make contributions to Melrose Park through his philanthropy including funding for local schools and providing freezers for local businesses
Melrose Park was founded on April 12, 1847, by the Reverend John H. Melrose and his wife, Maria. The first home in what is now Melrose Park was built on a farmstead that John H.Melrose and his family bought from the Wecker family. In 1850, the Melroses moved to a new home at 524 North Avenue. In 1865, the Melroses had two children: George Washington and Anna Belle Melrose. George Washington became president of Illinois in 1876 and died in office; however, Anna Belle married Congressman John Pellerin (D-Illinois) after he won the election in 1880. After her husband's death in 1882 she continued to live with her son until 1902 when she sold their house and moved to Cicero, Illinois where she died in 1906.
