In the early 1800s, Melrose Park was a small farming community in Illinois. Because of its location and its relationship to the neighboring town of Wheaton, national guard units were stationed at various points in the town. In 1871, when Wheaton was renamed Chicago, the Illinois National Guard was disbanded and its members were transferred to Chicago's city police force. However, because of their connections to Melrose Park, some of these officers continued to serve with the city police force until they were disbanded in 1896. Consequently, many national guard gift items that are currently preserved or on display inMelrose Park originated from this period. One example is a rifle that belonged to Captain Ralph Dodge (1821-1893) who served as commanding officer of the 1st Illini Infantry Regiment from 1872 until his retirement in 1893. Other gifts from this period include a cavalry sword belonging to Commodore John J. Green (1838-1909), an artillery piece belonging to Brigadier General James Hickey (1847-1902), and a staff car that Griggs & Stratton donated to the city of Chicago in 1907. Today, most gifts from Illinois' national guard history are stored or on display at Soldier Field in Chicago or at Camp Douglas near Bloomington; however, there are still a few items remaining which date back to Melrose Park's earliest days as a farming community located adjacent to Wheaton. One such item is an American flag that was given by Major Harry Laughlin (1868-1930) who served as assistant adjutant general for training with the Illinois National Guard between 1915 and 1916. Another example is an infantry sword donated by Colonel Alfred Payson Butler (died 1935) who had been assigned as inspector general for armaments for both troops within and outside Illinois during World War I.

The modern era of the National Guard began with World War I when America declared war on Europe. In order to provide manpower for the war effort, Congress passed a bill that established the National Defense Act of 1916. This act provided for organized militia forces to be used by the president for purposes of defense and social welfare. During World War II, Congress increased funding for the National Guard and activated them into combat zones such as North Africa and Europe. The late 20th century saw growth in popular support for the National Guard through legislation like The Posse Comitatus Act (1962) which limited membership within certain groups of people who could be drafted into military service; and The Selective Service Law (1940) which required all citizens between 18 years old and 45 years old to register with their local draft board if they wished to serve in any capacity within the military or police forces

The name comes from the word "melt" which means to turn something into liquid form. The first white settler in what would become Melrose Park was John Fenton who arrived in 1837. He and his family were followed by others over the next few years until all of the original settlers had left for various reasons: military service, relocation for economic reasons, or bankruptcy. However, the community kept growing and soon there were property lines drawn between different sections of town to keep people as close as possible while they developed their businesses and homes. In 1881, entrepreneur George Washington White purchased one acre of land at corner of Woodbine Avenue and North Shore Drive in what is now Melrose Park from John Fenton for $1,500 cash only - making it one of the earliest commercial areas in Chicago (and Illinois). White rapidly began developing this area into a thriving business district with many industrialists starting up businesses here such as Drysdale Glass Company (founded by Sidney Drysdale), Jarden Tea Company (founded by Samuel Morse), Chicago & Northwestern Railroad (later CSX Transportation) head office (now Sears Tower), Crystal Palace Theater (opened on November 5th 1912), Harry Houdini's escape room at 106 West Grand Street (), Chicago Athletic Club () and more. continued growth came during World War II when industry shifted out of downtown Chicago tomelrose park due to its proximity to Lake Michigan and other wartime needs like munitions production; however after hostilities ended things slowly started to decline with most businesses closing down or moving away during the postwar period (.
