The first marine gift was given to the town of Melrose Park by Captain John A. McCloskey in 1881. At that time, the town was located on the Chicago River and relied on fishing for its livelihood. The captain donated a small boatload of fish to be used for local fishermen and their families. The fish became known as "Melrose Park Fish." In 1909, the town created a Marine Museum to commemorateCaptain McCloskey's donation. Today, the museum includes exhibits about local maritime history and has a variety of artifacts from throughout Melrose Park's history. In 1970, Mayor Richard J. Melrose Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,824 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois after Chicago and Springfield. The Melrose Park Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The first Europeans to visit what is now Melrose Park were French traders who came ashore at Kedzie Harbor in 1763 on their way to trade with the Native Americans. The area that includes present-day Melrose Park was part of the Northwest Territory from 1783 until 1800 when it became part of Indiana Territory. On March 4, 1809, President James K. Polk signed an Executive Order creating the town of Chicago out of territory east of Lake Michigan and south of State Street including what are now parts of Melrose Park and North Lawndale Streets. Abraham Lincoln moved to Chicago from Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1847 and began practicing law there before moving to IL in 1851; he would become a Ulysses S. Grant Presidential candidate and later serve as mayor of Chicago from 1886 until 1888). The first store opened in what is now downtown Chicago by Wm Hickey & Son on Dearborn Street just north of Wacker Drive (now Van Dyke Road) on October 8, 1853. A post office called "Melrose" was established at this location on November 15th, 1853; it closed due to low mail traffic two years later. A general store built by John Gorham & Brothers soon followed on May 12th, 1854 across Dodge Avenue from where they still operate today as Gorham's General Store #1 (and also use that name for their building which still stands). On February 14th 1850smiths Nicholas Pemberton and John Stephenson built a sawmill east side Railroad tracks south between Cicero Avenue and Roosevelt Road just west ofpresent day Foster Boulevard; this mill operated until 1862 when it burned down due to weather conditions (the company relocated their operations downstream at what is now our current site near Union Station)). In 1861 Jesse James robbed his own trainload—or “train robbery”—of $5 million worth gold ore being transported from California through Union Station Depot during its morning rush hour! This event became known as “the Klondike Gold Rush” leading directly to American settlement in North America….In 1865 Anthony Hecht started construction northeast corner Clinton street/Wabash Avenue between Milwaukee avenue/Waukegan avenue Southwesterly corner Evanston avenue northerly corner Fullerton avenue…he named his new enterprise Hecht Elevator Co.; but this company failed within 3 years…..Hecht then erected a large modern elevator STATUE OF LIFE ON CICERO AVENUE IN MEMORY OF HIS PARTNERSHIP WITH NICHOLAS PEMBERTON AND JOHN STEPHENS celebrated every year since 1985 BY THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE

Melrose Park was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is now a neighborhood in the city of Chicago. The population was 24,693 at the 2000 census. The village of Melrose Park was founded by John C. Frick on December 12, 1871 as a result of the merger of two other villages - Maywood and Arlington Heights - into the larger city of Chicago. The name "Melrose" (a corruption of "mahr-roe") was chosen because it sounded like an English word meaning "park." The first store in Melrose Park opened its doors on February 3, 1872. By 1880 there were six businesses in the village – five stores and one grocery store. In 1886, when Chicago annexed all of Cook County, Melrose Park became part of the new county seat at Racine. In 1893, voters approved a measure to create a school district for the village which would serve both students from Melrose Park and those from neighboring Maywood and Arlington Heights. That same year saw the opening of what is now Northwestern University's first college campus in Evanston with land donated by John Drexel who also served as president of Northwestern University at that time. In 1907, voters passed an ordinance allowing barbers to open their own shops withinTenement Building No 11 (now Vernon Hills) without obtaining licenses from local officials responsible for licensing such businesses within blocks surrounding Tenement Buildings 1-9 across Erie Avenue from First National Bank building on North LaSalle Street where hair salons operated until 1935 before becoming dry cleaning establishments; today known as Lord & Taylor Place Shopping Center.. . . . In 1915 Congress passed legislation establishing public schools throughout Cook County free for white children up throughGrade 8 while black children were still required to attend private schools administered by individual families… Thus began oneofthe most important changes affecting school attendance patterns inCook County during this period: white children moving away from small villages to large towns or cities
