The city was named after fashionable Melrose Place in London. The first European to set foot in what is now Melrose Park was Nicholas Joliot in 1795. Joliot built a cabin on the present site of the City Hall and had his goods transported there from Mayfair by wagonloads of flour he brought overland from England. In 1815, John Prentice founded the First National Bank in what is now downtown Melrose Park. By 1820, two-thirds of all businesses in Chicago were conducted within five blocks of each other on State Street near Lake Shore Drive. Grain and cattle became the primary exports from this agricultural center and soon boasted such prestigious names as Armour & Co., Northwestern Bell Telephone Company (now Comcast), Sears Roebuck & Co., Empire Dairy and Fresh Market grocery stores catering to a growing population that began enjoying improved transportation options including streetcars and railways when they opened upChicago's north side more than ten years later
