Mchenry is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now McHenry County was John Hennessey who arrived in 1825. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Des Plaines River and named it "Hennessey's Prairie." Other early settlers included Captain John Kirby and his wife Nancy (née White). In 1847, General James W. Kinsley set up a military post at present-day Hennepin Grove to protect travelers on the Great Lakes from Indians. When Kinsley died in 1849, his post reverted to civilian control and became known as Camp Dodge for the next decade or so. In 1855, however, when Illinois became a state, Fort Dodge was reestablished at McHenry Grove as part of an effort by Governor Mifflin Toombs to root out Native Americans living near settlements on both sides of the great lakes.. When local farmers began producing grains and other crops for export during the late 1800s, they needed more water than could be obtained from Lakes Winnebago and Michigan; so they constructed ditches to draw groundwater away from those two lakes and bring it to their fields through wells dug into hillsides east of town.. After World War II ended there were large-scale agricultural changes with less reliance on irrigation systems; however much water still needs drawn from these two larger lakes which has caused some problems over recent years with high levels of fecal coliform bacteria in surface water supplies. So solutions have been put forth such as using smaller installation pumps that can move less water per hour instead of pulling all that water from Superior and Huron Locks which can quickly saturated areas causing flash flooding; but this expensive solution has not worked very well recently because even if small pumps are used there is always plenty of excess moisture left over after each pump cycle

In 1861, a post office was established in Mchenry and it remained in operation until 1914.In 1865, a cotton gin was built in Mchenry and it continued to operate until 1948. From 1870 to 1880,Mchenry had five churches: one Baptist and four Methodist churches. The first bank in Mchenry opened its doors in 1879. In 1906, a telephone line was connected to Mchenry and it remains operational today.In 1916,MchenRY began manufacturing automobiles called "Prairie Cats." Production ceased around 1922 but parts continue to be manufactured by various companies today including Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation
