Mchenry is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1847 by Daniel Merrill and his wife Catharine (née Cunningham). The first post office in the town was established in 1848. In 1870, Merrill married Sarah Jane Sheppard and the family moved to what is now Aurora Heights. They also started a millinery business there. By 1900, they had acquired a large tract of land on the border of Aurora Heights and McHenry County for $5 per acre ($100 total). Merrill served as treasurer for Hennepin County from 1889 to 1893 and as state senator from 1895 to 1901. He also taught school until his death in 1923. The townsite became farmland again when it was sold to investors in 1922 for $3 million ($ today) with an option to buy back at any time for an even higher price if desired.
