Mchenry is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. The town of Mchenry was organized on November 4, 1837 by John M. Hickey and James W. Townsend. It name was changed to Mchenry on December 10th of that year in commemoration of General Andrew Jackson's victory at the Battle of New Orleans. The first post office opened in Mchenry on February 14th, 1838. In 1853, James Auld became one of the incorporators of the village of North Randall and later became the mayor thereof. He donated land for a public square which still stands today near his home on Main Street in Mchenry. The current library building also dates back to this time and has been used as a schoolhouse since 1907

It is a small town with a few hundred residents that sits on the banks of the Mississippi River. The McNamara family continue to live in the town and are involved in many aspects of its social life and economy. The community's history begins with David McNamara, who came from Ireland in 1848. He established himself as a landowner and trader in what is now Clay County. In 1851, he married Mary Ferguson, who was also from Ireland. With his new wife and their children, David McNamara set out to make his mark on Mchenry. They began to purchase land around the town and built homes there. In 1865, they donated land to Clay County for a county courthouse complex that still stands today. David McNamara died in 1881 while serving as Clay County sheriff. His widow continued to operate the business until her death in 1902; after her death, it passed through several hands before being purchased by Phebe Ligon-McNamara, Sr., who served as mayor of Mchenry from 1951-1957 and again from 1971-1975
