Maywood, Illinois is home to the USS Maywood (LHD-5) and her namesake battleship, USS Maywood. The USS Maywood was commissioned in 1944 as the flagship of Commander Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz’s Fifth Fleet. She served as flagship during World War II, the Korean War and Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. In 1989, she was transferred from Naval Station Norfolk to Naval Station Chicago for use in the Western Hemisphere Defense Force. She served as a Flagship of US Pacific Fleet until 1996 when she was decommissioned and placed into storage at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. On January 25th, 2002, it was announced that the USS Maywood would be renamed LHD-5 and would serve as one of six United States Navy ships named after World War II commanders who died in action while serving with their nations during that conflict. On February 2nd it was also announced that Vice Admiral David J G Buchanan would become Commanding Officer of LHD-5 effective February 3rd and he would lead all ship operations on board ship. Maywood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Maywood is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Illinois. The community was founded on May 2, 1868, when a group of settlers from Aurora Township moved to what is now Maywood from Farmingdale Township. They named their new settlement after Mount Olympus, which they had seen as an ideal place to live because it was free from snow and ice. In 1870, the first post office opened in Maywood. The town grew quickly due to its location near railroad tracks and its close proximity to other agricultural settlements such as Bloomington and Decatur. By 1910, the population had reached 6,500 people and it continued to grow through annexation by neighboring towns until it reached its current size of 7,000 residents in 2000. Families who lived in Maywood during the 1930s experienced some of the worst weather conditions ever experienced in Illinois; namely maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). However, despite these harsh conditions, many people still chose to live and work in this small town due to its strong community spirit and supportive infrastructure.
