Maywood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Maywood was founded in 1825 by Amos Kendall and his wife Sarah to provide a town site for poor farmers who were moving into the township from other areas of Cook County. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "sweet Land". The first settler in Maywood was George Wetherbee, who arrived on July 3, 1825. He built a log cabin near the current intersection of Elm and State Streets. Wetherbee's cabin served as the nucleus of what would become Maywood over time. In 1830, Caleb Kapp established a wagon factory in Maywood that became one of the largest cotton ginners in Illinois. In 1840, John Pritzker bought Kapp's company and continued to operate it until 1862 when he sold it to James Fenton for $5,000$. He also started a flour mill here which continues to be operational today under its present name (Fenton Flour Mill). This milling operation produced flour for local markets as well as exported products such as bread and pasta until 1967 when it closed down due to lack of demand; however, parts have been re-purposed into new buildings at this location ever since! During World War II many residents worked on military construction assignments throughout Illinois including providing munitions storage yards at Joliet and Rockford Arsenal; erecting airfields at Grimsby and Midway Island; constructing troop barracks at Park Forest; manufacturing artillery shell casings during Operation Neptune’s Spear; and manufacturing oil drums for use by fighter planes during Battle of Britain . After the war ended many mayowers settled outside of their township limits or returned home but some chose to stay put including Edwin Hixon who opened up a grocery store/tavern named after him on Elm Street called “Hixon’s” starting in 1946 which remains open today! Other businesses such as Jiffy Lube Garage & Service Station located on US 60 just east of town center remain open today serving both locals & visitors alike! Additionally there are several restaurants & bars located throughout town catering to all types Of individuals with something For everyone! Maywood was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers who decided to move from the small town of adams, Illinois. The original settlers were Amos, John, Samuel and James Maywood. They named their new community after Mount Maywood in Scotland, where they had been living for several years. The community grew quickly, and by 1840 it had a population of around 100 people. By 1860 the population had increased to over 250 people. The growth of Maywood was due in part to its location: it was close to both the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Additionally, the community enjoyed good roads and plentiful water supplies. In 1871, Maywood became one of three towns in Cook County that were granted city status; this meant that it began receiving more attention from the government than before. Despite its growing fame as a city, however, life at Maywood wasn't always easy. Although most residents were content with their lives there, there were times when things got tough. For example, during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 many homes were lost or destroyed in the fire which caused extensive damage to the town center and infrastructure. Despite this obstacle though,Maywood continued to grow rapidly and by 1880 it had reached its current size – becoming one of Illinois' most important cities overall!
