Maywood is a small town in the Kane County area of Illinois. The population was 1,661 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Maywood settlers were families who arrived in 1818 from Maryland and Virginia. They built a log cabin on the east side of the Kankakee River. In 1830, they moved to what is now Maywood Village and began to grow corn, beans, and wheat. In 1835, they founded a Methodist church with thirty-six members. A mill was started in 1840 by Isaac Hull and his sons John and James. The mill turned out flour for local grocery stores as well as items for export to Europe. In 1865, Maywood Township was organized from parts of Aurora Township, Hinsdale Township, Winnetka Township, and Rockford Township. A post office was established at Maywood in 1868; it was discontinued in 1880 because ofthe railroads that came through that year. In 1870–71, construction began on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad which connected Chicago with Joliet Junction (now Elgin). The track ran through what is now Maywood village; it was one of the first railways to be built in Illinois. The town became an important center for railroad passengers; many of its residents worked on trains or went into business as entrepreneurs related to transportational infrastructure development across Cook County at that time%.
