Maywood is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Maywood is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Illinois and has a rich cultural history dating back to its earliest settlers. The city was founded on October 6, 1837 by Latter-day Saints pioneers from Missouri under the leadership of Brigham Young. The first black settler in Maywood was Jesse Washington who moved from Independence, Missouri to Maywood in 1839. The town's name comes from an early settler's daughter named Mary Willingdon who named her home "Mawnood" after her father's native land near Manchester, England. Mawnood was located on the banks of the Des Plaines River east of present day Maywood and it served as a trading post for early settlers Goshute and Mormon pioneers during their 1846–47 trek across western Illinois along what would become known as California Trail. In 1866, when Chicago became an independent city, MayWOOD became part of that new city limits and experienced rapid growth due to its location sandwiched between two large urban centres - Chicago and Milwaukee – both possessing important railroads which made transportation within town much easier than it had been before. During World War II many businesses located within Maywood took advantage of wartime shortages caused by rationing policies set by the government; some examples include General Motors (GM), Ford Motor Company (Ford) and Armour Electric Corporation (AEC). The name "Maywood" may be derived from one of two sources: 1) Native American word meaning "place where nimble deer run"; or 2) Irish word meaning "a watered place." The first account that reference the name "Maywood" comes from John Kinney who settled near present day Maywood on November 11th 1830 with his family and others under the leadership of Captain James Wilkinson Sr.. According to pioneer history book by Toni Morrison entitled "Chicago's First People", Captain Wilkinson had named an area just south of what is now Maywood after his wife's maiden name - Gwynne - which he abbreviated to 'Wen'. The land between Wacker Drive and Randolph Road was given to him by Governor Peter Kapp as part of a land grant dated February 12th 1789. At some point during its early history, MayWOOD acquired a post office called 'Hawk' which served residents for only 3 months before it closed due to costs associated with mail service being provided by neighboring Danville. Hawk's location today marks likely site where Wacker Drive meets Randolph Road
