The navy has a long and colorful history in Mattoon, Illinois. The first naval unit to arrive in the area was the USS Constitution on October 20, 1833. The Navy presence continued through World War II with the USS Missouri (BB-63) and USS Enterprise (CV-6). After the war, Mattoon became home to the Naval Air Station O’Hare which served as an important training ground for navy pilots during the Cold War. In 1990, Naval Base Mattoon closed its doors after more than 50 years of service. Today, the navy presence in Mattoon is still present with Headquarters Detachment 2 of 9th Fleet located at NAS Mattoon. This detachment provides support for operations around Chicago and Springfield. Additionally, there are several vessels used by Navy ships docked at various ports throughout Illinois including Mayport Municipal Marina in Jacksonville and Moline Municipal Airport in Moline.

The Mattoon post office operated from 1849 to 1865. It was renamed Mattoon in 1881. The community was platted in 1887 by George Fenton and James Hickey. A cotton gin and sawmill were built here in 1903-1904 by John Jablonski and Wm. Denny. Mattoon is located at (41.529411, -88.564867). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water.[1] As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,822 people, 535 households, and 474 families residing in the town. The population density was 144 people per square mile (58/km²). There were 683 housing units at an average density of 60 per square mile (24/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White,[3] 0% African American,[4] 0% Native American,[5] 0% Asian,[6][7][8][9][10] and 2% from two or more races.[11] Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population
