In 1935, the radio station KSAD-AM (1030 kHz) was founded here and has continuously beened broadcasting from this location ever since. The current owner of KSAD is the Mattoon Historical Society which operates it as a museum. He also donated four horses and two carts that were used by Custer's regiment while they were stationed at Fort Riley. In 1946, local residents raised money through bake sales and car wash nights to purchase an airplane for United States Air Force Colonel James Doolittle who would fly into Japan in order to surrender their country's enemies forces there before hostilities could resume following World War II ended officially on September 2nd 1945! Colonel Doolittle received his plane from North American Aviation Corporation at their factory located east of town on Highway 706 near modern day Interstate 70/I-80 junction! A plaque marks this spot today as part of Interstate 80 between Streator andMattoon IL! It should be noted that due to budget constraints during the late 1940s most planes purchased by United States Air Force came from European countries under Ulysses S Grant Administration such as Britain instead! colonel doolittle’s plane was one such purchase! The town has been completely destroyed by fire over the years but some remaining structures are still standing today.
