Mattoon, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 712 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mattoon is located on the border of Cook and Will Counties. The land that makes up Mattoon was originally donated by John Denton to the community in 1868 as part of a larger donation to neighboring towns. The first settler in Mattoon was James Crouch who arrived in 1846 from Kentucky. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and raised his family there until his death in 1892. His son, also James Crouch, Jr., became an important figure in early Mattoon life and helped found the First Methodist Church which still stands today on State Street near Center Avenue. John Aiken founded another early settlement called Randolph where he constructed a mill and store in 1847-48. Aiken's grandson, John Witherbee Aiken II (1887-1965), served as mayor of Mattoon for two terms from 1952-1960 and again from 1964-1968; he also founded both Status Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (now Abbott Laboratories) and Witherbee & Associates Insurance Company (now Allstate). It was during World War II that Mattoon saw its biggest boom with development occurring along Center Avenue due to demand for wartime materials such as aluminum cans and other products made here including gasolineoline tanks made from animal parts

It was laid out in 1846 by James Mattoon and named for him. The first settler in Mattoon was David Gentry who arrived in 1847. John Cramer and his family also immigrated to Mattoon in 1849. The early pioneers were farmers and their families who raised corn, wheat, potatoes, chickens and pigs. In 1865 a post office called "Mattoon" was established; it continuedOperating until 1959. In 1886 the City of Chicago annexed Mattoon; as a result, mattoons became part of Chicago's then-new "north side". Because Chicago's north side extended westward into DeKalb County (now suburbanChicago), mattoons remained within Cook County until 1898 when they were merged with Park Ridge to form the new city of Evanston (). In 1944 two explosions destroyed most of the town center killing over 50 people and wounding over 200 more.. One year later due to World War II military activity only 10% of buildings had been damaged or destroyed from bombs that fell on the area during bombing raids conducted by the USAAF Eighth Air Force during World War II . In 1951 an air raid killed 5 people including Mayor Harry Sellers and 3 children playing outside before destroying all but one building leaving no residents remaining Some 25 years ago on Presidents Day evening President George H W Bush visited Mattoon after being elected as Governor of Illinois On October 20th 2009 Mayor Harry Sellers died at age 93 after serving for 57 years
