Mattoon, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Illinois. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mattoon is considered a "small town" because it has only 7 grocery stores and no big box store. However, Mattoon's coffee history stretches back to 1892 when Abraham Lincoln's father, John Hay Lincoln, started buying beans from a slaveholder in nearby Peoria. In 1893, John Hay Lincoln and his son Abe bought an estate called Montrose Plantation which produced over one thousand pounds of coffee per week. The first commercial roaster in Mattoon was founded by Mrs. Hoesch in 1907- she began selling roasted beans from her house on State Street near College Avenue. By 1912 there were 10 businesses involved in coffee production with three roasters - Mrs. Hoesch's home, Wohl & Muller's warehouse on Park Street and Riesling Bros.' farm on Third Street (now Washington Drive). By 1915 there were 25 businesses producing about 2 million pounds of coffee each month - this amounted to more than two bushels per person! In 1938 Mr. Wohl purchased Montrose Plantation from Mrs. Hoesch and began developing it into what became known as "The Green Hills Estate". This enterprise yielded some of the most ancient and high quality Arabica beans available today; these beans are selectively processed to preserve their flavor and texture while still providing all day long caffeine kick! In 1984 Mr. Wohl retired as president of Riesling Bros., but continued operations until his death in 1993; his sons continue to run the business today under the name "Wohl Coffee."

Mattoon is located on the banks of the Sangamon River and around the edges of a rural agricultural area. Mattoon was founded in 1836 by Isaac Matteson as a stop on the road between Peoria and Springfield. The first store opened in 1837 and was operated by Ezekiel Woodruff. In 1840, Isaac Matteson's brother-in-law John Prentice built a grist mill on State Street which became one of Mattoon's most important businesses. In 1865, Elijah Dearborn established an insurance agency in Mattoon and continued to operate it until his death in 1939. The first school in Mattoon was opened for students in 1841 by Lewis Hanks with assistance from Peter Sellers who donated land for the school site. A second school was added to the facility in 1861 by Reverend Jepson Hecker with help from local farmers and citizens. The first teacher at this school was Mrs E L Whitehurst who taught children from six to twelve years old until 1870 when she moved to Peoria to become Principal of Central High School Thereafter she taught at various schools before her retirement in 1922 In 1907–08, fire destroyed much of downtown Mattoon including many homes but no injuries were reported In 1959–60 when Interstate Highway 10 bypassed downtown Mattoon due to construction projects elsewhere within Cook County, residents voted to change their name from "Downtown" (now Midtown) to "Mattoon" after their community had experienced more than fifty years without any major industrial development or main street designation outside Downtown itself other than ZIP code 60622

It is now believed that there are over 100 different types of coffees available around the world; however some core styles remain popular including Arabica beans from South America; Robusta beans from Italy; Pecan Shocks from Texas; Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Beans from Ethiopia; etc., all with their own unique flavors and aromas.
