Mattoon, Illinois is one of the oldest towns in the United States. The town was founded in 1827 by a group of settlers from New England. The first coffee shop opened in Mattoon in 1876 and remained open until 1969. At that time, it was the only coffee shop in the town. In 1984, Mattoon became the home of two independent coffee roasters- Peet's Coffee and Dutch Bros. With its new location, Mattoon became known as "The Gourmet Coffee Capital of America." In 2001, Dutch Bros. merged with Peet's to form Peet'sDutch Bros., still one of the largest independent coffee roasters in the United States today.

Mattoon is a town located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is part of the Springfield-area and has been served by the Mattoon School District since 1907. The town is named after General James K. Mattoon who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as an officer with the Union Army during the American Civil War. The first settler in Mattoon was John Paine who arrived in 1837. In 1839, Alexander Shields established a flour mill on a stream near present day Centerville Road and Main Street. In 1840, Arent Weeden built a gristmill on Broad Ripple Creek east of present day Center Street. By 1842, three other mills had been erected: Rufus Hodge’s mill on Broadway Avenue north of Main Street; Daniel Webster’s mill on Griggsville Road west of Center Street; and Ebenezer Higgins’s mill on Orchard Hillock Road east of Center Street. In 1846, Amos Davenport bought land from John Paine for $4 per acre and began to build a new community called "Davenport". When it became evident that Davenport would not be able to meet all his construction needs within his own town he sold some land to Daniel Webster for $10 per acre which became known as "Webster Farm". Because Webster only developed one block of land - including what is now Middle School - much of what is now Webster Park was built by later settlers such as George Matson and others who took over what were once Quaker dwellings or used farmlands donated by friends or family members. In 1847 Jeptha Gibbs purchased 1/3interest in the Schuylkill River Railroad from its original builder Nicholas Pennoyer for $3 cash plus stock (valued at $25) which enabled him to develop what is now Village Square into an area that included residences, shops, churches and schools before becoming part of Springfield Township when it was organized in 1865. In 1911 Folger Store owner John Folger donated land along Griggsville Road between Center and Griggs Streets for use as a school yard with four classrooms/a gymnasium/an auditorium/a well etc.. On July 10th 1915 school opened with Mrs . J F Michaud as teacher

Coffee was originally ground into small balls and brewed with water and hot oil. In 1795, Giovanni Battista Moro started making espresso using whole bean coffee rather than ground coffee. This allowed for a fuller-bodied cup that tasted more like an Italian roast than a continental European roast. In the 1940s, Dutchman Jan Kees van der Rohe began selling machines that could make four different types of espresso: Lungo (long), Margarita (medium), Soprano (small), and Americano (shot). These machines let users customize their drinks to include different amounts of sweetener and milk based on their preference. By the early 1970s, all major chains had espresso machines that could produce both cortados and macchiatos. The popularity of espresso has waned in recent years as people have moved towards other forms of morning caffeine such as black tea or oatmeal

Mattoon is a city in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,831 at the 2010 census. The Mattoon Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places district that includes over 100 buildings and districts in Mattoon. Mattoon was founded by General David Dixon on December 10, 1814 as an agricultural community on the eastern edge of present-day Mattoon. The first settler in what would become Mattoon was John Crouch, who arrived on October 14, 1815. It took until 1800 for the village to gain status as a town; it did so when the state legislature passed an act creating Will County. In 1836, the village's post office was renamed "Mattoon" in honor of its founder. In 1865–66, many residents of Carbondale moved to Mattoonsville due to land values increasing there while Carbondale remained largely affordable with few available acres within reach for those without wealth or connections. This migration helped spur agricultural production and led to establishment of mills and heavy industry along the Sangamon River Valley corridor from Carbondale to Galesburg—a region now known as northern Illinois Manufacturing Corridor
Mattoon was founded in 1829 by George Mattoon and his family. The town grew rapidly because of the slave trade and the influx of new settlers. In 1847, Mattoon became part of the United States.
