Mattoon is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. One of Mattoon's most well-known residents is Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who served as mayor from 2007 to 2013 and has since become President Barack Obama's first chief of staff. In 2014, Emanuel was inducted into the Illinois Governor's Mansion for his work in running Mattoon during his time as Mayor of Chicago. Mattoon was founded by Anna Hazleton on November 15, 1834. The first post office in Mattoon was established on December 3, 1835 by J.C. Hanna and Phebe Ahearn with a population of 12 individuals. The name "Mattoon" was chosen because it bore resemblance to an old Dutch word meaning "humble." The village had its first election on April 14, 1840 when six men were elected to represent it in a three-man commissionele under the new government formed following the American Civil War (1861–1865). On July 1st 1861 voters approved a petition requesting that they be annexed to Cook County and receive their own government; this request was granted two days later on July 3rd 1861 by Judge James Tischler after hearing from both sides in open court about what merger would mean for the village and county residents respectively! On October 9th 1868 another petition for annexation was filed with Judge Tischler but again no action taken until November 5th when it appeared that some members of the Village Board may have been influenced by newly appointed Alderman John Larkin (20 years old) - one vote shy of being able to take office due to term limits! After much discussion and consideration Judge Tischler decided against annexation based on several factors including concerns about water supplies available within Mattoon itself as well as other nearby villages which had already achieved such status; he instead made recommendations for future growth within Mattoon itself! Aftermath: With only 2 out of 6 trustees remaining from when annexation requests were filed there wasn't much hope left that any changes would happen even though there seemed like everyone wanted it! Just over 4 decades later we are still here considering voting on annexation back onto our board just so we can continue this great community spirit

Today, there are many different types of fresh roasted coffees available on supermarket shelves around the world; however, only a select few offer an excellent cup of espresso or cappuccino that can rival some of these older brands.

Mattoon is a small town in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is part of the Urbana-Champaign Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mattoon is named after Captain John Mattoon who settled there in 1824. In 1868, it was known as "Mattoonville". It became a city in 1907 and has since been renamed to Mattoon. The first settler in Mattoon was John Hanks and his family who arrived on November 10, 1824. They built a log cabin on the east side of what is now State Street near where Stonington Road meets Route 61 today. In 1828, Captain John Mattoon founded the Village of Mattoonsburg (now Mattoons) west of his original settlement on Illinois' Capeseed River. He selected an area including present dayMattoon for his new village because its location offered good grazing land and easy access to water resources for horses and other livestock." Captain John's daughter Sarah Ann McIntosh donated 100 acres (40 ha) of her farmstead near what is now Old Main Street to support her father's village development project." The Village of Mattoonsburg grew rapidly due to colonists arrival with their herds of cows, pigs, horses and other livestock which were used for raising crops such as corn, beans and peas along with building stockyards/factory buildings such as sawmills/grinding mills etc... By 1800 there were over 300 residents living in the Village." In 1847 Mayor James Laughlin dedicated a bridge across the Capeseed River connecting Withham Townshipriaversing South Duffield Road (now Interstate 88) in order to provide easier transportation between Withham Township downriver past Green Bayou onto High Street that ran through City Hall becoming one continuous street within downtown Mattoon with current day State Street Bridge across First Creek just north ofOld Main Streets entrance becoming North Duffield Road when I-88 closed southbound in 1999 combining Withham Township with Champaign County creating an intracounty transportation crisis that led to heavy reliance on private automobiles until recent years when public transportation options have resumed." Mayor Laughlin also built Olney House which still stands today as a museum displaying artifacts from early Village life including clothing made from hides taken from local deer., A kitchenette rental business operated by Mrs Eliza Fenton opened up on Dearborn Avenue adjacent to Central High School during this time period giving rise to current day Elmwood Drive much like many similar businesses located throughout downtowns around the country given suburban growth patterns ."Mayor Laughlin left office abruptly after only two years following disagreements about how best To Allay Transportation Crisis - Became leader who abandoned plans for new expressway & instead created Historic Downtown District named after him; New street name reflects changed times: Elmwood Drive" During World War II lieutenant colonel Ossie Davis served as Commandant at Camp John Rennie northwest of town while also working at Wabash Plantation northeast of town serving under General George Patton while Patton's headquarters rotated through various camps within Champaign County
The Mattoon Massacre took place on October 15, 1871, when a group of men, women, and children were killed by Confederate soldiers during the Battle of Mattoon. The massacre is also known as the John Brown Raid.
