Mattoon, Illinois is a small town located in the southern half of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,665 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Most people in Mattoon are farmers who grow corn and soybeans. There are also a few small businesses and local churches. The major industries in Mattoon are manufacturing (woodworking and furniture), retail trade, and transportation. The first residents of Mattoon were German immigrants who arrived around 1818. Over time, others from France, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and other countries joined the group until there were about seventy-five Germans living in Mattoon by 1847. In 1870, two brothers named John and George Weiser founded a grocery store on South Main Street which became one of the largest grocery stores in Illinois. They later acquired land on West Side Road which they used to build a larger store that still stands today called John Weiser Grain Mill Company Building (now home to IHOP). In 1916 they sold their business to Leland Mabry & Sons who continued to operate it until 1935 when it was donated to the city by them for use as an library building. A few years later another family bought out Mabry's share and ran the store as an independently owned business until 1956 when it merged with Midwestern Baking Company (later known as Hennepin County Corporation) to form what is now Hennepin County Corporation grain mill company #2 (now part of JBS Foods). In 1975 this company was spun off into its own company - Midwest Grain Holdings Incorporated - which continues operations today as one of the largest food processors in America with over 1 million workers worldwide including over 600 employees here at our headquarters located on Center Street in downtown Mattoon! From humble beginnings back when John Weiser Grain Mill Company#1 operated just outside of town on West Side Road all those years ago these days we see some incredible things happen here at Midwest Grain Holdings Incorporated! Mattoon, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of the state of Illinois. It was first settled by men who came overland from Missouri in 1836. Mattoon has been a part of Cook County, Illinois, since 1881. The population was 6,724 at the 2010 census. The name Mattoon comes from Mount Olivet which was named for the apostle John and his family who visited the area in 1795-96. There are several theories as to why Mattoon got its name: 1) A man driving down a road called "Mount Olivet" thought he saw an oak tree with green leaves and decided to call it that, so this is probably where Mattoon got its name from. 2) Another theory suggests that when one of Mattoon's merchants built a home on top of an hill and called it "Mattonee Hill", people started calling their community "Mattoon" because they were seeing what looked like tall trees near their house. 3) still another theory suggests that someone delivered manure to the town's residents on horseback and they called it "Mattonee Hall".
Mattoon is a city in, and the county seat of, Rockford County, Illinois. The population was 107,811 at the 2010 census. Mattoon is also home to the Mattoon Indian School District. The first European settler in Mattoon was Captain John Fetterman who founded Fetterman's Landing on the current site of downtown Mattoon on December 5, 1847. He named it after his old friend and business partner Jeremiah Fetterman. In 1848, Daniel Boone landed his family near present day Mercy Hospital when he explored what would become Rockford County for the first time. The town of Mattoon was platted on February 10, 1849 by Elijah Holmes and James Treadwell under the name "Favero." Rockford Township was organized on April 15, 1850 by order of General George Washington Butler from land donated by John Crawford. On May 1st same year Samuel Davenport became the first township treasurer and served until November 3rd when he resigned due to health concerns which led to an election for trustees that failed to fill one vacancy caused by Davenport's death two months earlier. The first courthouse in town was built in 1851 by Jno Mapes with funds provided by local citizens as part of a bill passed in response to a petition from John Brown that asked for recognition as a free people's state within Lincolnshire County. A second courthouse replaced it in 1860 after fire destroyed the original building which had been used as an jail during prohibition years; this building still stands today (but has been renovationized). Reverend Jesse White settled at what is now known as White Settlement #1 on September 12th 1852 following his Exodus from Missouri via wagon train across country; white settlement number 2 followed three weeks later (on October 7th). In 1865 Union troops burned down all three buildings within minutes of reaching them while conducting an raid against Confederate forces nearpresent-day Danville; this event is considered one of Rockford history's most significant losses due to its impact upon local society and economy. A new schoolhouse/library/nuptial chapel was erected just east of present-day Elm Street between 1895 and 1897 using appropriations provided through acts such as the Morrill Land Grant Act (1885) which gave farmers large parcels of public land around Chicago – including parts of what are now downtown Mattoon – in return for helping build schools throughout Michigan Territory including Cassia Township (now Danville), Stephenson Township (now Bartlett), Bloomington Township (nowNormal), Ottawa Heights Township (now Elgin), La Salle Heights Township (now Grays Harbor), Kankakee Heights Township (now Winnetka) and many others over the next several decades culminating with construction of Summit High School adjacent to present day Elm Street on November 9th 1955; this new high school remains today one of Rockford County’s largest educational institutions with over 300 students enrolled along with more than 30 staff members variously responsible for teaching music PE science math Earth sciences technology & literature arts & humanities social studies science
