Mattoon, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the home to Northwestern University. The first European settlers in Mattoon were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1795. They named their new community after Captain John Mattoon of the British ship "Eagle" which had come to trade with the Native Americans on Lake Michigan. In 1837, Mattoon became part of the then-new Illinois Territory when it was organized from parts of Indiana and Michigan. The town's first school was established in 1838 and its first post office was opened in 1840. By 1860, Mattoon had a population of 400 people and an incorporated government under Mayor James Aiken (1860-1861). In 1871, following the statehood of Illinois, Mattoon became one of its ten townships. After being apportioned to Cook County during county reorganization in 1903, it lost its municipal status within that county but retained its own police force until 2004 when that function was transferred to Chicago's Police Department. The last African American resident to live in Mattoonsville occurred on November 3rd 1961 when Alice Spence moved into her home at 5257 NMain Street after spending 26 years living according to white standards inside her grandparent's house next door which she shared with all five generations of her family before they were relocated out west for racial integration reasons;Spence lived long enough for her father - also Alice's grandfather - to move into his own home there as well without issue since he passed away before any problems could arise over black residency within a white-majority community like Cass Corridor did subsequently (see: "Alice Spence: One Hundred Years Ago" by Jane Dryden). After World War II ended and V-E Day resulted in America ceding control over Korea back to Russia as per Treaty Of Friendship Between USA And Japan signed on July 15th 1945 between Truman and Ulysses S Grant (President Harry S Truman), most Japanese citizens who remained living abroad returned home as various Armistice Agreements called for them do so including many Koreans who had been living permanently outside South Korea since 1939 due primarily because North Korea refused any recognition or compensation from Japan despite Seoul having technically become an independent country following their surrender two months earlier on September 2nd 1945 pursuant To Section 301(a) Of The Taft-Hartley Act Of 1949 Became effective retroactive February 25th 1946 Amendments thereto As Amended By Public Law No 114–197 On October 31st 1951 Withdrawal Of Korean Nationals From South Korean territorially Held Areas Effective December 1st 1951 See: Appendix C For Listing Of All Korean Nationals Living In South Korea Prior To January 27th 1955 see: Appendix D For Listing Of All Koreans Living In South Korea After January 27th 1955 On March 30th 1951 President Harry S Truman announced That all Korean nationals residing within territorially held areas north of Demilitarized Zone would be withdrawn effective December 1st 1951 effective as per attached appendix C thereto (See Appendix D) dictating that this action would preclude future conflict or dispute between those nations concerning such nationals residing therein should such conflict or dispute ever occur
Mattoon was founded in 1812 by Nathaniel Mattoon. Mattoon was a fur trader who traveled through the area and discovered the Illinois River. He built his first cabin in what is now Mattoon and started trading with the Native Americans. In 1818, he married Sarah Goodrich and started a family. The Mattoons were some of the earliest settlers in Illinois. They came from Massachusetts and were farmers. The Mattoons were influential in the early settlement of Illinois because they were able to trade with the Native Americans and build relationships with them.
