The community was first settled in 1836 when John Matteson and his family migrated from Ohio to what is now Matteson. At the time, most of the land around Matteson was forested and swampy. Today, much of the town's infrastructure has been built on land that has become more developed - such as heavy industry, such as a paper mill and an auto factory - but much of the original downtown remains intact. One of Matteson's most famous residents was Mayor Richard J. Daley, who served from 1961 to 1987 and helped lead Chicago through its early years of growth and transformation. Daley is also widely remembered for his role in helping create the city's famous integrated schools system - which included public education for all white children while black children were sent to segregated private schools until 1978. Today, many businesses in Matteson focus on sectors such as technology or research; however, some legacy industries still operate in the town - including The Armour Company (now Arthrex) and Ford Motor Company (FORD).
