Matteson, Illinois is a small town in the county of Cook in the state of Illinois. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Matteson is located on a bend in the river Kankakee and has a downtown area with several businesses and services. It borders Rockford to the east, Beloit to the south, and Danville to the west. Matteson was founded by Germans in 1827 as a fur-trading post on what is now Evansville Road. The community prospered for many years before becoming known for its brewing industry. In 1881, it became home to one of America's first breweries when Pabst Brewing Company moved from Milwaukee to Matteson. Pabst would go on to become one of America's most popular brewers and continue producing beer until it shut down in 1992. Today, much of the original brewery remains extant and is open for tours during regular business hours: 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday and 8 am to 1 pm Saturday & Sunday inside or outside its original building on East Main Street (now South First Avenue).
