After four years as Vice President (1865–68), Lincolns succeeded Grant as President onMarch 4, 1868 and served until March 4th 1881 when he resigned because of health problems caused by overwork and stress at home with two young children Edith (1868–1915) and Franklin D. Roosevelt (1880–1945). A three-term Republican Ulysses S. Grant (1869–76) who had been Political Director for Presidents James Buchanan (1863–67), Andrew Johnson (1869–74), Ulysses S. Polk (1877–87), Rutherford Beston Hayes (March 4th 1881 – March 3rd 1886) also lost re-election against Democrat Grover Cleveland in 1880 due to popular vote fraudulently cast ballots for him instead of Republican opponent Daniel Webster; this event would later be called "the greatest political scandal in American history". On May 2nd 1888 Illinois became one day state when it became a presidential election day with both tickets winning—Grover Cleveland(D)+Arthur Pryor(U2)+John Pemberton(C1)+Harrison Gray Otis(C2). Matteson, Illinois is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Illinois. The population was 5,752 at the 2000 census. Matteson was founded in 1847 by Deacon John Matteson and his wife Martha as a farmstead on the banks of the Lick River. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on the newly developed railroad network. In 1916, Matteson became one of twenty-five towns in Cook County to become part of Chicago. Today, Matteson is known for its unique architecture, including several large churches and a number of post-war housing developments.
The Matteson, Illinois area was first settled by the Illini in 1818. The community was named for Amos Matteson, a native of Maine who had come to the United States in 1809. In 1829, the town was platted and the first school opened. By 1840, Matteson had a population of about 100 people. Manufacturing began to grow in Matteson during this time and by 1870 it had become one of the largest manufacturing centers in Illinois. A fire destroyed most of the town in 1886 but resulted in a comeback for Matteson that continues to this day.
