The Matteson Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services along the entire 1,500-mile long Illinois coastline since 1915. One of the first Coast Guard stations in Matteson was established on the present site of the station in 1915. The current station is located at Pier 94 on State Street in Matteson. During World War II, Station #1 was activated to provide maritime security for the Great Lakes region and operated out of Pier 5 in downtown Chicago. The Coast Guard also had a detachment stationed at Joliet Naval Air Station during this time which provided support to Navy jets flying over Lake Michigan. In 1955, Station #2 was activated at Pier 89 on State Street in Matteson and soon after employed a helicopter squadron which patrolled both coasts of Lake Michigan day and night. In 1966, when the Illinois state government purchased land adjacent to Pier 94 for $5 million dollars it became known as “Station Point” and soon afterward began construction on what would become known as the “Matteson Coast Guard Station”. The new station sported a large hangar that allowed for operation of helicopters, seaplanes and other vessels while also housing an air traffic control tower. It wasn’t until 1990 that the airport was built next door to Terminal A which now serves as headquarters for both the Coast Guard Museum and Airport Authority. Today, with an active coast guard force numbering more than 2,000 officers and civilians members from across central Illinois,the Station provides essential law enforcement services 24/7 along 1,500 miles ofshoreline stretching from Rock Island County down to Stonington County in southern Connecticut; northward through Buffalo Grove into Kenosha County; eastward to Crystal Lake; westward through Mundelein into DeKalb County; all the way back upriver to Holland America Line Harbor here at Pier 94 where we take our final delivery each morning!

The Matteson Coast Guard was founded on December 15, 1853 by the men of the First Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. The first coast guard post in Matteson was established at the mouth of the Chicago River. In 1872, a new post was built on the river's eastern bank and named for Captain John F. Ryan, who had served as captain of Company A, 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. In 1915, Captain George Kapp organized the Coast Guard detachment that would serve during World War I. The detachment existed until 1919 when it was disbanded due to budgetary cuts. Captain George Kapp later served as commandant at Coast Guard Station Matteson from 1923 until his retirement in 1931. From 1935 through 1941, Commandant John Hynes commanded Coast Guard Station Matteson which patrolled Lake Michigan between Buffalo and Milwaukee; this station became an important logistical hub for naval operations in World War II. After World War II ended, Commodore Harry Condon managed Coast Guard Station Matteson from 1951-1957 and then again from 1961-1969; he also served as acting commandant from 1957-1961 while Commodore Clarence Loomis served as permanent commandant until his death in 1969; under Commodore Condon’s leadership, the station underwent several modernization programs including construction of a harbor and launch ramp and acquisition of new equipment such as radar equipment and boat launching ramps.
Matteson, Illinois is a small town located in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. Matteson is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1871 by farmers from out of state and named after James A. Matteson, a landowner in nearby Lombard Heights. In 1889, it became a city and was renamed after John Fenton Matteson Sr., who had donated $10,000 to help establish the city's first library and water tower. According to the 2010 census, Matteson has a total area of , all of it land. The village has a total population of 827 as of the 2000 census; this figure increased to 1,030 as of the 2010 census due to an increase in apartment buildings being built there over that period. As most residents are employed within Matteson or its surrounding areas rather than outside it (although some people commute), many social activities take place within its walls; such as fund-raisers for local charities or family reunions on Saturday nights during summertime when many families move into central Illinois for vacation). In recent yearsMatteson has seen steady growth with new businesses opening up along with more people moving into the town for work or leisure reasons. Some current examples include: online retailer Overstock which opened its first store there in 2013 and now employs about 100 people; gym chain Well-O-Fit which opened their first location in Matteson in 2015 and employs about 60 workers; restaurant giant ChopHouse which opened their second location in Mattesson last year and employes around 50 workers; auto dealership MidasUSA which relocated from nearby Lombard Heights to open their third location here last year employing around 150 employees; digital media company Crave Video who moved from neighboring Elmhurst to open their fourth store there last year employing about 30 employees; health food store GroceryOutlet whichopened its first store here last fall hiring about 15 workers (the largest concentration yet); mattress manufacturer Sleepy’s Place Which reopened their old factory building adjacent to Pembroke Park Zoo & Aquarium last fall employing around 25 workers among other companies that have recently set up shop in Matteson including several high-tech startups whose operations are not currently visible but will once they become operational have an impact on employment within the community
