Matteson is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The post office at Matteson was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it closed in 1984. The community has a population of about 165 people as of the 2010 census. The Matteson area was first settled by Germans who came over the railroads during the early 1800s. By the 1880s, many other European immigrants had also arrived in Matteson and surrounding areas. Farming became a dominant industry inMatteson after World War I when tractors were introduced to agriculture. In 1951, Matteson organized itself as a village and adopted a constitution that provided for self-government with limited powers. In 1957, Matteson voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an independent city within Kane County subject only to the authority of the county government. In 1967, Matteson annexed portions of neighboring townships to form another municipality: North Matteson Township (later Cook), South Mattesi Township (later Arlington Heights), and East Aurora Township (later Burr Ridge). A large shopping center was built near Interstate 64 and state Route 34 south of town in 1978; it is now known as Park Plaza mall. A new high school opened in 1984 on land donated by local businessman Leo Baehrle; it remains one of the most prominent educational institutions located within the community today.
