Markham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Markham were farmers who arrived around 1836. In 1839, Captain John Cagle and his family built the first house on what would become Markham Road. The community's name comes from Major General Arthur Camp (1775-1847), a prominent figure in the War of 1812 who served as Governor of Illinois and Minister to Canada. In 1871, railroads arrived in the area and began serving Markham with trains coming into Chicago each day from different directions. This led to greater business opportunities for residents and businesses as well as more people moving into the town. By 1916, over 60% of all traffic on Lake Shore Drive passed through Markham! Today,markham offers an eclectic mix of cultures that together make it one of America's most diverse communities. This was the largest deployment of U.S. Marines and sailors since World War II and it marked the return of an American Flagship to active duty after more than 20 years hiatus. Since then, the USS George Washington has visited numerous countries throughout Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and South America as part of various deployments including Operation Neptune's Spear III & IV; Global Hawk mission; Arabian Warrior; Multinational Force - Iraq (MINFICO); Expeditionary Strike Group 8; Expeditionary Strike Group 11-12; Deployment port visit to Bahrain on October 16th-17th 2013 and visits to Spain on November 10th-11th 2014 where it participated in Royal International Air Tattoo celebrations together with Spanish Air Force jets. In total, the USS George Washington has shipped over 6500 pounds of cargo and delivered over 350 items including tanks, tents, vehicles and supplies to troops stationed around the world. In addition, this large delivery allowed for better understanding between different militaries as well as increased maritime interoperability between different services acrossAmerica’s defense budget.

Markham is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The townsite was platted in 1847 by John Dolan and James A. Markham as part of a land grant to Samuel Gibbs from the Illinois General Court. In 1852, David J. Bruce and other men founded what would become Bruce's Corners Store on the west side of town across from Prairie View A&M University. The store operated until 1908 when it closed due to prohibitionism. In 1853, George Stephenson built a steam locomotive engine named "Bloomington" in nearby Bloomington and brought it back into service in Markham on July 6th with Classes 10-12 passengers (later enlarged to 16). From Bloomington, Stephenson took express trains south to Chicago for customers such as Governor Morris Kilburn and members of the Illinois State Senate who were meeting at the McCormick Exhibition Building at Armour Square downtown: these trips cost only $1 per person compared to $5 for a ticket bought at one of Stephenson's shops in London or Paris! In 1854, Samuel Gibbs donated land east of town on which he built an academy which became Lincoln High School (now Lincoln Park Zoo) – one of two high schools open to students from rural areas (the other being Cook Academy located just north of town). An ordinance authorizing formation of a village was passed by the Town Council on December 4th, 1855; however no growth occurred until 1860 when Drury Market Road was added as a street frontage making possible easy access by farmers markets selling produce along that route. 2nd Ward Alderman Isaac Swayne served as Chairman during this time ! On January 5th 1861 Village President Augustus Burchfield issued an Order setting forth specific regulations governing building/construction within limits laid out therein including but not limited to rates for water service; sewers; fireplaces; lights; etc., effectively forming what would become known as "Town Plan". This ordinance laid out boundaries for future villages throughout McLean County including Markham proper within which structures could be erected without prior approval from the Board Of Health - something unheard of today! Villages were initially authorized up to 2 square miles with up To 500 inhabitants living there... this area now encompasses much larger tracts including parts of Lawndale and Oak Lawn
Markham, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John P. Markham and his wife Catharine. The town was named for the natural resources that were available in the area such as timber, coal, and water. The town grew rapidly due to its location and became an important transportation hub for the region. In 1902, the town was renamed by Governor of Illinois James A. Garfield after the assassinated President George Washington.
