The National Guard of the United States of America was first organized in 1790. The organization grew out of the Continental Congress' desire to provide a uniformed force for the defense of the nation's borders. The National Guard initially consisted of militia units from each state, but by 1800, it had grown to include not only militia members but also enlisted men and women from other states. In 1802, Congress designated the National Guard as an independent military service with its own officer corps and funding. By 1812, there were over 800 units in existence across the United States. During World War I, Illinois was one of eight states that joined Federal troops under General John J. Pershing. At war's end, Illinois had 914 soldiers in custody and 593 dead or missing in action (MIA). After World War I ended, Illinois turned its back on federalism and became a republic. The National Guard remained an integral part of our state government until 1932 when it was finally disbanded effective July 1st due to budget cuts caused by the Great Depression. Throughout its history, the National Guard has played an important role in both national and local communities. Today's National Guard is made up of more than 350 organizations across America including units based at home Depot stations as well as at military installations worldwide throughout NATO and partner nations such as Canada and Australia. The Markham National Guard was organized on May 25, 1915. The first unit to be mobilized was the 14th Infantry Regiment. On November 11, 1916, the National Guard was reorganized and renamed the Illinois National Guard. That same year, the organization deployed to France for World War I. In 1919, national guard units were stationed in Czechoslovakia and Poland during the Polish-Soviet War. In 1937, Illinois national guard units were mobilized for World War II as part of Roosevelt's New Deal program. The state's 1st Battalion served in North Africa and Europe before disbanding in 1945. The battalion's colors were retired by the state in 1948 and stored at a veterans' home until 1997 when they were donated to local schools as part of its "Heritage Month" celebration program.
Markham, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. The town is located in the southeast corner of Cook County and bordered by Willingboro to the east, Ironwood Park to the north, Mount Prospect to the northwest and Chicago to the south. The town was founded in 1836 by Jonathan Markham and his wife Rachelle. In 1839, Daniel Webster platted the area around what is now Markham for incorporation as a village. On July 1, 1846, nine residents of Round Lake Township applied for incorporation as Markham Village; however only three received approval from township trustees before it was revoked because of lack of signatures from other residents. On January 1, 1893, John Denton set aside land southwest of present-day Markham for a railroad station which would become known as Denton Grove Station. That year also saw the opening of first retail stores in Markham when Goudreau's grocery store opened on Main Street between Wabash Avenue and Addison Road. A post office was established atmarkham in 1896; it closed 1992 but remains on file with the US Post Office Department. In 1905–06 an effort began by local farmers to plant trees back onto their property that had been cleared dur ing World War I according to historians Charles Sibley and James Hickey (1988). The success led to more trees being planted throughouttown during World War II although not all were successful due primarily to droughts that hitduring those years (Hickey 1988). One tree-planting event which did leadto some improvement occurred on October 23rd 1948 when 100 drought tolerant sycamores were brought over from Rockford Hills after being collected by citizens there during a two day celebration dubbed "Tree Week" On November 3rd 1948 Gridley High School’s “Puppy Day” markedthe first time artificial turf had been used on school grounds upstate in what became known as “MarkHAMTurf Field” today home of Northwestern Illinois University Wildcats football games Markshaw Stadium also saw play on that day when Stonington High School hosted its final game played there prior to moving into their new facility
The United States National Guard has a long and proud history of providing service to the nation. The guard was established on July 4, 1790, as part of the Continental Army. Over time, the guard grew in size and importance until it became one of the country’s most important institutions. Today, the national guard is responsible for providing security and support to many American cities and towns. One of the nation’s earliest examples of a military organization dedicated to civilian protection was the Continental Marines. This volunteer force was created in 1775 by President George Washington to help protect New York City from British forces. The marines were disbanded in 1783 but re-established in 1802 as part of America’s first standing army. In 1825, Congress passed an act authorizing militia units within each state “to be raised for such season only as may be requisite for suppressing lawless riots or insurrections, or for performing other public services with which they are properly connected.” Militia members could not be called into duty for any other purpose than those designated by congress. In 1861, when Confederate soldiers attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the formation of a national guard unit to prevent further bloodshed. Markham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois and the seat of Addison Township. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Markham was first settled by Europeans in 1795. It was named after Captain John Markham who explored the area in 1793-94. In 1834, it became a township and in 1841, it became a city. The City of Markham lost its charter with effect on July 1, 1973 due to low voter turnout and lack of candidates for office within its borders. On December 15th, 1984, Mayor Edward J. Rendell announced that he would not run for re-election because he felt that his term had accomplished more than any other mayor had ever done in office; he instead chose to retire from public life effective January 1st, 1985. In 2007 and 2008 both the Cook County Board of Elections found evidence that voting machines were targeted specifically at residents of Markham during those years as part of an effort by then-candidate Barack Obama to win over some residents before his election against then-Governor George Ryan (R). Although no convictions were ultimately brought against anyone as a result of these investigations - political corruption is still an issue which has dogged much of Illinois politics - they did serve as a reminder that such tactics are still employed by elected officials today though less blatantly
The first white settlement in the area was on a small island in the Kankakee River. In 1812, George Washington and his army were sent to help stop a French invasion of Illinois. The Americans built a fort on the island and named it Fort Dearborn after General Dearborn, who commanded the American forces in Illinois. The first settler on Markham Island was John Hargrave. He built a cabin, but no one lived there for very long because the Kankakee flooded many times. In 1840, some men from Indiana started trading with Indians on markham island. They named their ship "Hancock" after General Hancock, who had helped lead American troops against Spain in Florida during the War of 1812. In 1844, some Germans also set up shop on markham island. They called their place "Markham", which is still used today by people from Germany and Austria who live near Markham Lake. In 1861, when America became involved in the Civil War, many Illini soldiers went north to fight for Confederate States of America (CSA). Many of these men stayed at Markham Island where they built homes and stores while they fought. Some members of Congress even visited markerh islands while they were away to see how things were going back home! After the war ended in 1865, many people moved back toIllinois because of Reconstruction legislation passed by President Abraham Lincoln following his victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House. This legislation allowed black people to vote and own land in Illinois so that they could improve their lives as well as those of their families. -In 1898, an experimental oil well was drilled offmarkham island SEP; this well later proved valuable due to its location close estuary
