Markham, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Markham was founded in 1837 by John Markham and his brother-in-law, Samuel Bowman. The community was named for Captain John Markham, who had died in 1836 during the Black Hawk War. The first store opened in 1838 and the first school was built in 1840. The post office opened in 1850 and the first bank was established in 1857. In 1865, John Fenton bought land adjacent to what is now Markham Township from General Andrew Peabody for $1,000. In 1870 he built a home on what is now Elm Street which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the town as it offered an outdoor privy with views of Lake Michigan and downtown Chicago skyline from its front porch. In 1935, Hennepin County moved into new facilities on Elm Street (now South Park Avenue) across from Fenton's home which provided space for local government services and remains today as one of the town's most prominent landmarks. In 1940 Alain Pritzker donated land to make way for Reid Park which has since become one of Chicago's most important parks while also serving as a backdrop to annual events such as Grant Park Open Air Market Day and Chicago Marathon race day festivities
