Markham, Illinois is a small town in the south central section of the U.S. state of Illinois. It is located on the right bank of the Meramec River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of St. Louis and 50 miles (80 km) east of Chicago. The population was 7,205 at the 2010 census. The first gourmet coffeehouses were open in Markham in 1892 by Italian immigrants Giovanni and Antonio DeMarco, who ran two restaurants called "L'Espresso" and "Il Caffè lungo il Canale". They served Italian-made coffee with personalized service and roasted beans from their own roasting mill on a small lot next to their restaurant. In 1893, Filippo Bruni opened Bruni's Coffee House in downtown Markham where he sold French roast coffee made by his father-in-law Ettore Zammitini with house roasted beans from his farm near Joliette in France. In 1896, John Doherty opened Doherty's Coffee House at 409 N State Street which became one of the most popular Gourmet Coffee Houses in town due to its unique atmosphere - a large room outdoors with an artificial turf floor that allowed customers air circulation and a view of the river below; it also had gas lamps for illumination inside while outside there was a large stage for music performances or speeches by local politicians or business men. By 1910 there were over 20 Gourmet Coffee Houses operating throughout Illinois including six locations in Markham alone! Throughout this time many Italians migrated to America looking for opportunities to make money and began importing quality European espresso beans instead of just making their own coffee which gave these cafes a unique flavor profile not typically found elsewhere in America at that time!

Markham contains a long and colorful coffee history. The first recorded purchase of coffee in the area was made by Nicholas-Jacques Rousseau in 1793. He bought two bags of ground beans from a gardener named John Newton. Coffee began to be sold commercially in 1837 when Johann Strauss set up his business, Strauss Brothers Coffee House, on Market Street in Markham. In 1852, General John A. McClernand founded the Illinois Central Railroad and began transporting goods eastward from Chicago through Markham. This helped to bring about significant growth for the town and its businesses. The railroad also brought with it new residents, who started making their own coffee at home or buying it from local merchants. By 1903, Marks had become one of the most important communities in north central Illinois due to its wide variety of retail businesses and its growing population of people of all ages.
Markham is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The first European settlers in what would become Markham arrived in 1814. They were part of a group that included Timothy Pickering and his brother-in-law Alexander Macdonald, who founded the town on land leased from the state of Illinois. The town plat was filed on April 21, 1815 and named for General Hugh Stanton's forces that had fought in the War of1812. At its incorporation as a village on November 3, 1834, it had a population of just under 200 people. On December 5, 1861 – three days after Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States – residents of Markham voted to secede from Illinois and form their own government. The new government declared itself an independent republic called "Markham Republic." On January 1, 1862 the Union army burned down all but one building in downtown Markham while occupying the town; this event is still commemorated by a plaque at Fourth & Main Streets. shortly afterwards Confederate forces raided nearby towns and destroyed most major infrastructure including stores and mills before retreating back into Missouri whilemarkHAM continued to exist as an unincorporated community until May 1865 when it became part of Grant Park following Chicago's annexation by Chicago The post office moved to Markham from Wheaton on October 15th 1889 which marked 100 years since it first opened there as First National Bank (now Wells Fargo). In 1918 local resident John Ladd served two terms as Mayor with wide access to power due to his connections within Chicago machine politics during World War I followed by another term as Mayor starting in 1933 until he was impeached in 1945 over graft allegations In 1955 local resident William Kapp introduced legislation which would makemarked cities with over 50 thousand citizens required to establish elected boards or committees charged with performing various municipal tasks such as fire suppression etc., something which did not take place until 1978 when Cook County established its first public works board successor entity called "Markham Community Development Corp." In 1966 local resident Lewis Jablonski introducing legislation creating city limits which would have limited development west of Cicero Avenue between 95th Street/Cooks Expressway and 147th Street/Lake Shore Drive After more than 50 years markHAM reverted back to unincorporated status effective May 12th 2008 upon approval fromthe city council

The first residents of what is now Markham were farmers who settled there in 1836. They built their first house on a hill near present-day First Baptist Church. The town was named after Colonel James Markham who had bought land in this area from General Harrison Gray Otis. Markham's growth began with its location as a stop on stagecoach routes running between Chicago and other cities during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1908, railroad officials decided that it would be more beneficial for them if they moved some of their tracks out of Cook County so that they could build a line connecting Chicago with points farther north. This move led to increased business for local businesses and made it easier for people living in Markham to get work elsewhere in greater Chicago. In 1916, Mayor John McCormick designated part of what is now Oak Lawn as an open space where people could picnic or take walks without fear of being disturbed by cars or other vehicles passing through oncoming traffic. This initiative helped make Markham one of many areas around Chicagoland which enjoyed such an amenity during that time period. By 1938, whenmarksHAM had become one of only two villages left within Cook County after all but its namesake city had disappeared into suburban sprawl –the other village being Cicero –Markham's population had swollen past 2,000 residents."
