Markham is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,527 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Markham Manor, a home built by John Davenport in 1836 for his wife Sarah and their three children. The first post office opened in 1837, and the first settlers arrived in 1839. In 1841 the village of Markham was organized and named after John Davenport's home. By 1870 the community had a population of 1,500 people and was incorporated as a town. The railroad arrived in 1907 and made Markham an important center for commerce. In 1930 it became one of twelve townships formed within Cook County; it lost its township status after annexation by Chicago in 1961. In recent years, some businesses have relocated to other parts of Illinois or left the area due to economic decline; however, many residents remain proud of their small-town culture and history. Many foods that are popular around here such as hamstrings bacon wrapped dates or green beans are still eaten today even though they may not be produced locally anymore because they can be bought at most grocery stores across the state or online retailers like Amazon

Markham is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,503 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Markham was Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1803. He named it for John Markham, a British settler who had come to Illinois in 1802. The first post office in Markham was established on December 3, 1834 by Rufus W. Canada and James Fenton. A store and mill were built there in 1840 by Jno. Hutton and others; the village incorporated as a town on February 9, 1851 by vote of the residents of the two villages combined with approval of the state legislature on April 15th following a bill providing for such incorporation.. The old flour mill which still stands today was built about 1830 by Daniel Hutton (son of Jno) and operated until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire. There are also several residences from this time including: Hutton House (now an historical museum), Canada House (now used as apartments), Cooksborough Place (now an apartment complex), Parsonage Estate (now a bed and breakfast), Mrs Ladd's Schoolhouse, Marks & Spencer's Storefront Building, Library Block (now being used as apartments). A new flour mill opened in 1898 on the site of present day Sears Department Store No 693 across from Old Orchard Park Golf Course off Route 20 / I-290 just north of downtown Chicago . This mill continued production until 1963 when it closed due to lack of demand. The final product from this mill went into storage before being reactivated again in 2003 as one half owner operator Prairieview Flour Mill LLC producing whole wheat flour ..... prior to that it had been mothballed since 1984! From here weathered some tough times but have bounced back amicably with our current operations which include 2 other mills - one owned by another company that closed down years ago but we rebirth them with fresh ownership after they bought out their predecessor’s interest - creating 2 more jobs! Our village has taken many strides during its history including having our very own high school located within walking distance (.8 miles or less) – makingmarkhamoneofthemosttownsheathinginillinois – along w/our rich cultural heritage& traditions dating back centuries!
Markham was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Markham and his brother John. The town was named for Nicholas' father, who had died in 1794. In 1827, the original courthouse, built in a Gothic Revival style, burned down. The community rebuilt it and reincorporated in 1829. It became an independent city in 1902. In 1912, Markham won the right to be part of Chicago through annexation by the city. In 1914, the city granted its first charter as a municipality with a population of 25,000 people. In 1922, the capital of Illinois was moved from Springfield to Markham because of concerns over disease spread throughChicago's immigrant populations. In 1930, when Prohibition ended nationally and alcohol began flowing freely into Illinois from neighboring Wisconsin and Michigan prohibition areas, Mayor John Lennon challenged Chicago's ban on liquor sales within its borders; he lost but showed public support for prohibition while living inmarkham during this time period as mayor
