The Markham, Illinois Army National Guard troops have been fighting in local and international military conflicts since the early 1800s. In 1815, two years after the state of Illinois was created, the first unit of the modern-day Illinois National Guard was raised at Mt. Prospect Barracks. The regiment served during the War of 1812 and participated in several engagements against Native Americans. In 1865, when Lincoln was elected president, General George W. Thomas was appointed Commander-in-Chief of all U.S. Forces afloat and ordered to organize a military force for service in Mexico City as part of Grant’s army occupation strategy. On November 15th, 1865 General Thomas arrived at Vera Cruz with 1,020 men under his command and proceeded to establish himself as Santa Anna’s provisional government administrator. A subsequent treaty signed by both Abraham Lincoln and Francisco Villa recognized Mexican independence from Spain but did not recognize American military involvement in that conflict; however American forces continued to operate ashore throughout most of Reconstruction Era South America until 1898 when they were withdrawn following Spain’s withdrawal from Cuba

Markham was an early village in what is now Illinois. The first settler in the area, Amos Green, arrived in 1818 and named his land "Markham." In 1840, John Stephenson purchased a tract of land east of Markham from Amos Green. He began to build a cabin there and named it Stephenson's Cabin. The town started to form around this cabin and soon had a post office, schoolhouse, and other buildings. The community grew rapidly and by 1851 it had over 100 residents. By 1860, the town had grown so large that it incorporated as a village. In 1865, the village renamed itself Markham after its founders -- John Stephenson and Amos Greene.
