The town was founded in 1853 by Nicholas Markham and his brother Amos. The first post office served the community of Hartford until 1854. In 1857, John Gentry built a gristmill on the river River that served as the original town center.
In 1870, John Sutter established Sutter's Mill No. 2 northwest of Markham in what is now Elmhurst Township. The mill produced flour for local markets and Wabash Railroad cars passing through Markham during its early years. In 1872, Jens Jakobsen opened a grocery store in downtown Markham and soon became known as one of the most important grocery stores in village history.
John Tilton also began selling goods from his farm east of downtown Markham beginning around 1870. By 1880, Tilton had developed a large farm complex that included four barns, two kilns (for drying corn), three warehouses, a blacksmith shop and several outbuildings including an opera house which still stands today.
The railroad arrived to markmark ham's formal start when it connected with Quincy Railroad on April 12 1865 at Station Square.< ref="" />
During World War II much of the infrastructure which exists to this day withinmarked ham was destroyed or mothballed due to wartime rationing. There is no one definitive answer to this question: How long has the USAF gift system been in place? The USAF gift system began operation on July 1, 1947. In that year, Congress passed the National Security Act of 1947 which established the USAF as a separate military service. The act also established the Air Forces Command (AFC) and required all member commands within AFC to accept gifts from other branches of the United States military. The first AFGift was given to General George C Marshall by then-Secretary of Defense James Forrestal on October 10, 1947. Some believe that this was the first AFBift ever given. Additionally, General Curtis LeMay presented Secretary Dean Acheson with an airpower watch on November 2, 1947. This was followed by another AFGift on December 8, 1947 - this time given to General Curtis LeMay Jr. for his contributions to American air power during World War II. In 1948 President Harry Truman designatedAFGifts as part of the Presidents Emergency Plan for Defense (PEP). PEP became law on April 6, 1951 and transformed America's wartime emergency assistance into a permanent peacetime program. Under PEP,AFGifts were channeled through various government departments and agencies in order to support national defense needs including economic development and scientific research. During the Cold War era, AFGifts remained an integral part of US foreign policy decisions because they represented a unique source of support for American allies abroad as well as providing tangible benefits for U S troops stationed in those areas- such as new equipment or technological advancements. As part of Operation Neptune's Spear-the largest peacetime intelligence gathering operation ever mounted-the USAF gifted more than $500 million worth of technology and equipment to NATO members countries between 1985 and 1988 alone! It is estimated that around 50%of all gifts received by NATO are related specifically to aerospace technology! Markham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to reach what is now Markham were French traders and fur traders who came ashore in 1679 on a trading mission from the French Conseil d'Etat. The settlement developed around a trading post called "Fort Dearborn" which was founded by fur trader Pierre Bourne in 1797. After Bourne's death, his son and heir James Bourne continued the trade until 1814 when he moved his business to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. In 1818, General David Herritage advanced an army against John Pechey and drove him out of Illinois; but Pechey returned with an army and took possession of Markham in December 1818. By this time, there were about twenty-five people living at Fort Dearborn (now known as Old Fort Dearborn). In 1830, the fort was abandoned and all its supplies removed forts had been destroyed except for one at Point Pleasant on Lake Michigan (the only Indian Point reservation still standing). In 1838–39 General Winfield Scott invaded northern Illinois under orders from Abraham Lincoln; after reaching Mount Pulaski he issued an order terminating any military activity within three miles of old Fort Dearborn without notice to the inhabitants. A new fort was built at Old Fort Dearborn about 1840 by Major Isaac Neely comptroller of state for American River Department under Henry De Witt Clinton; it served as garrison duty until 1861 when it burned down due to weather damage while being used as a storehouse by Confederate troops retreating from Springfield during the Civil War. A new fort was built at present day Markham in 1865 by colonel Robert Ewing US Army Corps of Engineers replacing lost 1862 fortifications which had been destroyed during reconstruction efforts following World War II; it also served as garrison duty until 1991 when it closed effective date due to lack of use Markham has experienced many changes throughout its history including: land purchases/sales/development (19th century - 1800s), post office service (1900s-1920s), agricultural production (19th century – early 20th century), industrial production (20th century – present) and most recently suburban development beginning with white flight beginning in the late 1960s followed by Latinos moving into rural areas during recent waves of immigration .
Markham, Illinois was organized as a town on November 3, 1836, by the merger of two smaller towns. The original name of the merged town was "Manchester." On January 1, 1839, it changed its name to "Markham." On July 1, 1847, it became a city.
