In the town of Marion, Illinois, small batch coffee has been around for years. The first coffee shop in this town was opened in 1912 by a man named Hiram Guthrie. This spot served natural, organic and fair trade coffee. By the early 2000s, small batch coffee had become an important part of the community. In 2002, a group of local entrepreneurs started The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (TCB&T). TCB&T is one of the largest small-batch coffee companies in the United States. Today, TCB&T offers over 30 distinct roasts and varieties of espresso and iced tea. Small-batch coffee has been important to the Marion community because it allows people to connect with their local farmers and get their hands on high quality produce. Marion, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Town of Marion was organized on March 1, 1871 by act of the legislature and named for General David S. Marion who served as commander-in-chief of Union forces during the American Civil War. The first store in town opened its doors on December 15, 1872 and it would be only five years later that a post office would be established in Marion with Wm. Haggerty asmaster. On July 14, 1875 an act was passed by the legislature giving to Marion Township $10 worth of land to be set aside for schools and public improvements; this money had been raised from local property sales and stock offerings during the previous year's election cycle which had taken place to raise money for local needs including education. One hundred years after its incorporation into Kane County, today’s community has experienced many changes due both to advances in technology and globalization – most notably since World War II when it became one of several municipalities located within Stroger Hospital District No. 2 through annexation by neighboring communities such as Park Forest and Evanston.
