In 1818, the United States of America was founded. The country had a large area and was growing rapidly. Illinois, which is now part of the U.S., was then a part of Canada. The area that is now Marion was then called the Shawnee Nation and it was one of many Indian reservations in the United States. When the United States acquired the land from Canada in 1853, it also acquired all of what is now Marion County, Illinois from the Shawnee Nation. The first white man to live in what is now Marion County was John Morton in 1836. He built a cabin on a small creek near present-day Belleville. In 1841, John Morton's son-in-law, James Wigglesworth, started trading with Native Americans in what is today known as Peoria Township. In 1850, he married Martha Jane Kapp and they began farming around present day Unionville. They also sold goods at local fairs and markets. By 1860, there were over twenty families living in Unionville and six businesses existed including two stores, a blacksmith shop, an old flour mill and three homes for rent or sale). The early settlers were mostly farmers who grew crops such as corn, wheat and potatoes; some also operated businesses such as wagon shops or furriers (specializing in trapping animals). They were not very fond of government control over their lives so they did not submit to being moved to areas like nearby Rock Island or Chicago where people were coming from with more advanced technologies and more prosperous lifestyles than they could imagine possible! One important event that happened during this time period happened when General George Armstrong Custer led his army into Indian Territory to fight against Indians who had taken over much of central Kansas Territory growthing resistance against American forces until finally surrendering on July 5th Battle at Little Bighorn which ended any hope for peaceful negotiation between American troops occupying Indian Territory during this time period! This event forever changed how most Americans view Indians which led to further resentment towards them among many colonists! The wagon trade continued until about 1870 when railroads came along which made transportation much easier for goods moving across large distances much faster than walking or horseback riding! With railroad travel becoming available throughout most of America by 1830 thanks to Samuel Morse’s invention of telegraphy®, traders soon shifted away from wagon travel altogether While staying close enough to markets for fresh produce & meat; long distance traveling became much less common
On November 3, 1820, the first white settlement in Marion was established by a group of men led by Captain Daniel Boone. The town quickly became a center for trade and commerce, and its founders were instrumental in its growth. In 1824, the city was renamed after General John C. Fremont, who had come to Indiana during the Mexican-American War. After his death in 1853, Marion became an important center for American Indian culture and education.
