This ship was called CSS Alabama and it served as a flagship for Commodore David Dixon Porter during his campaign against General Ulysses S Grant in 1864. After Commodore Porter's defeat, CSS Alabama burned at sea after hitting a mine off Cuba while serving as America's first warship to do so. In 1865, USS Constitution II was donated to the United States Navy by Mrs. JF Sears of Marion Township due to its unique design which had not been used since she left service in 1919 when she was decommissioned at Memphis, Tennessee}. She became one of only two ships ever accepted into the Naval Reserve Fleet without being put into commission or sold (the other being WREC-4W). The community is named after Marion County in Indiana. A post office called Marion was established in 1836 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settler in Marion Township was Isaac Hite. Marion, Illinois is a small town located in central Illinois. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Marion was founded in 1847 and is the county seat of Cook County. The village of Marion was established in 1892 and merged into the town in 1925. The first settlement in what is now Marion was called "Hagley" after Isaac Hagley, a pioneer settler and member of the Illini Company. A post office called "Hagley" was established on March 2, 1847, and remained in operation until it been discontinued on December 15, 1850. In 1849, three men by the name of Wartenberg bought about two-thirds of Section 7 east of present day Main Street from David Brown for $1 per acre. They began to build a cabin known as Hennepin Grove which still stands today on what is now Middle School Road near Interstate 55. On February 14th, 1850 an act to create a townshipwas approved by the General Assembly having been proposed by Mr. Prentice and also seconded by Mr. Stephenson & myself jointly with Messrs Mapes & Carlin Esq’s permission theretofore given us for that purpose only which we have since retracted because our minds have change so much upon this subject since then!... We subscribed ourselves thereto accordingly without any other inducement than that we thought it would be proper & expedient for us all together! Ira Blackwell became Township President on July 1st, 1850; .Moses Chapman became Treasurer October 16th following; John Doherty became Clerk November 9th; Lewis Stevenson became Superintendent September 1st following; Harry Laughlin become Physician August 29th following etc etc until finally Jno Caldwell who arrived here about July 1st took over everything October 6th! This made Marion Township 10 acres square including present day Douglas Park!! A schoolhouse named "The Mount Carmel Academy" was built in 1861 near where Main Street meets Douglas Park Drive (now I-55) There were also two churches - First Baptist Church (built around 1860) and Second PresbyterianChurch (built around 1870). In 1865 there were three schools: one school for girls at Highwood Road/Park Lane (later renamed Douglas Elementary School), onechool for boys at Westside Road/ Hallingford Avenue (later renamed Eastside Elementary School), and one scholastic district school at Northfield Boulevard/ Church Road which blended Methodist education with NorthernNormal teaching methods while also serving as Principals' home among other things! In 1903 when Kossuth saw an opportunity to make money through advertising he offered 50% interest on new investments up to $50000 payable monthly with no interest thereafter unless paid back within twelve months or sold at public sale One such investment led to Kossuth's purchase of two block fulls of land next door to his current office building on State Street from Leland McCormick for $2 million dollars!!! And thus Marion Became The Town Of Kossuth!!!!!!!!!!!!
In 1871, the town of Marion was organized and named for General James Marion, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Marion on October 14, 1871. The first store in Marion was built by George W. Denny on December 3, 1872. At that time, it was one of the few stores open in what is now downtown Marion. In 1876, a school was built and used until 1906 when it burned down. In 1907, a church was built and served until 1961 when it also burned down. In 1911, a gasoline station opened in Marion and remains operational to this day. In 1925, the first movie theater opened in Marion with 11 seats and screened films until 1978 when it closed due to financial difficulty. There have been many other businesses established throughout most of Marion's history including restauraunts (including The Three Musketeers), pharmacies (including A&P Drugstore), banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., First National Bank), car dealerships (Ford Motor Company) and more; however these are all currently inactive or defunct.
