In 1793, French colonists established a plantation near Georgetown, Guyana, which started production of coffee. The Dutch also began plantations in Suriname and South America during the seventeenth century.
In 1867, the United States acquired Marion, Illinois from the French. The area had been purchased by the United States in 1815 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. When the area was ceded to France in 1870, it remained an unorganized territory. On July 14, 1871, Congress passed a bill creating a territorial government for Marion and providing for its organization into a county. The first sheriff was appointed on October 1st and the first election took place on November 8th. The county seat was established at Arlington Heights. The County of Marion was created on September 15th, 1888 from parts of Cook and Johnson Counties. On January 3rd 1889, portions of Dearborn and Kane Counties were added to Marion County. On March 15th 1912, much of Kendall County (including most of today's Chicago) became part of Marion County when it was merged with Johnson and Dearborn Counties. On October 1st 1925, all but one township in Kendall County became part of LaGrange Township when that township was organized under Act No. 521 Of 1924 from parts of Cook and Johnson counties according to plan approved by the Board Of Commissioners on December 13th 1923- effective January 1st 1924 In 1935 there were only 10 residents living in Arlington Heights while more than 350 people lived in La Grange Township which included most within what is now Chicago neighborhood
On November 3, 1871, the town of Marion was chartered by the Illinois General Assembly. It is located in Kane County, Illinois. The population of Marion at the time of its incorporation was 2,521. On December 1, 1907, the town had a population of 11,711.
