Marion is a city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLean County and home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first people to live in Marion were two families who came overland from Kentucky in 1814. In 1847, a group of settlers started out from Lebanon, Indiana and arrived in what is now Marion. They named their community after General James K. Polk while he was Commander-in-Chief of the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, another group of settlers arrived from Illinois and named their community after Joshua Latham Butler, one of America's founders as well as its first U.S Attorney for Illinois Territory. The town grew quickly due to logging and other businesses being established here such as an flour mill and a tannery. In 1875, the first post office was established in Marion with citizens John Aiken (postmaster), Solomon Weiser (teacher) and George Waring (commerce). By 1880, the population had increased to about 350 residents. In 1906, Marion became incorporated as a municipality with a population of just under 1,000 people when it combined with nearby towns Notre Dame de la Prairie and Albion Heights to form what is now known as Metropolitan Chicago Township No 2 annexed by McLean County on January 1st 1907 having a total population then of 1086! On November 5th 1928 by popular vote Mclean County approved annexation into Chicago by voting yes on referendum formatters petition which authorized Mayor Shawcross to annex portions including part or all of Highland Park Village & parts or all of Arlington Heights Township!

In 1849, the area now known as Marion was part of Illinois. The first white person to live in what is now Marion County was a man named John Butler, who settled there in 1836. In 1857, the county was organized and named for General James K. Polk, who had been elected president that year. The first courthouse in Marion County was built in 1861. By 1890, the population of Marion County had grown to over 12,000 people. The growth of the cotton industry in America during the late 1800s caused workers to move into northeast Illinois from all around the country. Many new subdivisions were developed near Americana University and other industrial areas in Marion County. Development also increased when railroad companies began providing transportation across town lines and through newly built towns such as Enterprise and Carpentersville. However, by 1920 many residents of Marion County had left for better opportunities elsewhere in Illinois or Indiana due to high prices for farmland and limited job opportunities available on the eastern side of the state. After World War II ended, many small businesses closed throughout northwest Illinois due to competition from larger businesses statewide. This economic recession did not affect neighboring states such as Indiana or Kentucky very much because they were still experiencing rapid economic growth at that time; however, it affected Marion County deeply because so many jobs were lost within our community-based economy. As a result of this recession, crime rates rose significantly among residents living close to each other and within 1 mile (1 kilometer) of commercial centers which created fear for safety at night while walking home from dinner or getting groceries shopping outside grocery stores. As recently as 2010 there remained few jobs open for those with less than a college degree despite wide open access to education thanks to recent tax cuts passed by Governor Bruce Rauner .
