The history of coffee in Marion, Illinois starts with Dutch farmers who grew coffee beans in the area as early as the 17th century. Coffee was first roasted and brewed here in the 1800s by German immigrants who founded a small plantation called Pfeffer's Roastery. In 1894, J.W. Mason opened his own roasting and brewing business, which would later become known as The Koffee Klatch coffee shop. In 1915, Marion's first grocery store opened selling groceries such as flour, butter, eggs, milk and coffee. By the 1940s, The Koffee Klatch had become one of the most popular cafes in town with its variety of flavors and Associated Press election results printed on every cup. In 1969, General Motors bought Pfeffer'sRoastery for $1 million dollars making it one of the largest philanthropic donations ever made to a local community organization. The GM property continues to be used for roasting and brewing operations today while also serving as a wedding chapel and meeting place for local businesses and residents alike.

In 1881, Marion, Illinois was organized as a town. The first post office in Marion was established on November 3, 1881. On May 1, 1904, the town became a village and on October 5, 1956 it became a city. The population of Marion peaked at over 10,000 in 1970 and today is around 6,500 residents. The history of Marion begins with the arrival of white settlers in 1841. They were looking for land to ranch and build homes on when they found what is now known as the Town of Marion. The first post office in town was established on November 3rd of that year by James Wray and his wife Martha Jane Elliott. In 1865, John Hays founded the Hays Mercantile Company which would become one of the most influential businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1978. Early growth within Marion took place through manufacturing; brickmaking being one such industry that thrived throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. A variety of companies operated within this sector including Barnes & Noble Book Store (1911), JB Hi-Fi (1915), American Tobacco Co.(1898), United Cigar Makers(1911) and more! In 1957, when Indianapolis amalgamated with other communities across Indiana into what is now known as metropolitan Indianapolis, part of that process included annexing much of rural Marion County to form this new municipality. During this time period there were many small businesses that either failed or moved out due to competition from larger counterparts within Indianapolis or from outside sources like Chicago or Detroit! It wasn’t until 1978 when Hays Mercantile Company closed its doors for good after years OF success that things began to change for Marion residents; however not all aspects did improve during this time! Many residents still struggled during these tough times although some innovative minds decided to take advantage of new technology available at those days! For instance: IBM Corporation had their research lab located right next door to local high school so students could take classes while working; even if company hours conflicted with class hours! Another example would be Burger King who opened up their own drive thru service back then called “Kentucky Fried Chicken”! Today we know them as KFC! And finally: almost 50 years later there are still some great memories associated with our favorite fast food restaurant
