Marion is a city in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,896 at the 2010 census. Marion is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. It lies on the Sangamon River and forms part of the tri-state area with Springfield and Champaign. The name Marion comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where there is a willow tree." The town site was surveyed in 1826 by Samuel Shaw and named for General David Hunter's wife, Martha Washington Butler. A post office called Marion was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1861. In 1869, a new courthouse was built on State Street between First Avenue and Second Street. The building now stands as a museum known as the Marion Courthouse Museum. In 1915, local entrepreneurs organized what became known as the "Indiana Jones" Film Company to produce short films based on Indiana Jones stories written by Wm Haddon Spurgeon. However, little progress was made until 1951 when producer Frank Marshall contacted Spielberg about developing screenplays for a movie project entitled "Raiders of the Lost Ark". On September 25, 1955, Harrison Ford signed a contract to appear in Raiders of the Lost Ark., becoming one of Hollywood's most famous stars at that time. The success of this film led to other productions such as Epsons (1978), Star Wars (1977), Indiana Jones and Templeton Treasure (1981), Jurassic Park (1993) and several more over ensuing years including Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom (2018). Marion, Illinois is a city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLean County. The first settler in Marion was Levi Coffin who came to the area in 1827. The town was founded on April 12, 1830 by James Gentry and his wife Eliza Ann Cook as one of twelve towns formed from parts of La Salle and Winnebago counties by the state legislature during the 1830s as part of a drive to improve transportation and communication between Illinois and neighboring states. In 1836, Captain John Silliman established a ferry service across the Rock River between Marion and Peoria which functioned until 1840 when Indiana built a bridge over the river. In 1847, postmaster General Gideon Welles authorized construction of a brick steamboat dock on State Street in Marion for use by steamboats landing passengers at various points along both sides of the Rock River. A year later, on December 27, 1848–9th instant (), Marion became an incorporated village under state law after being chosen as one of twenty-five villages situated within Mclean County for incorporation under that act. After two years' delay due to financial concerns brought about by rapid population growth caused by new railroad construction nearby (the Chicago & Northwestern Railway), incorporation took place on January 3rd 1850 with 1125 residents living in three wards: east side (old mill district), west side (new mill district) and central ward (northwest corner of Douglas Road/State Street). On October 10th 1860 Colonel John Haines arrived at Louisville from St Louis via Indianapolis with news that Union forces had driven Confederate Brigadier General Samuel Jourdan out of Kentucky's largest city Memphis – causing Jourdan to flee into Missouri where he was appointed governor – marking this event as "the turning point" surrounding events leading up to American Civil War I(). On November 15th 1861 Colonel Haines arrived at Springfield from Carthage with reports that Abraham Lincoln had been elected President; this event marks "the great day" surrounding Lincoln's election victory over Southern Democrats who endeavored to re-elect Andrew Johnson instead (). By 1865 there were only 714 residents remaining in what would become Marion following federal military occupation during the war (); however it continued to serve as capital for much of eastern Illinois following its evacuation() In 2006 plans were made to develop downtown Marion into an artsy enclave focused around several small theaters while also developing additional office space; however these plans have been met with opposition from some business owners near downtown who feel they could benefit more from tax breaks given their location close to Interstate 80 (). A study done in 2007 found that downtown Marion should be developed into an $8 million commercial center comprising retail establishments such as convenience stores; restaurants; bars; hotels; offices; and light industrial uses such as manufacturing plants but no residential development has yet taken place despite petitions received throughout recent years from many property owners interested in redevelopment purposes which have not resulted in any decisions being made since then . currently there are only 2 buildings left standing on blocks once home to dozens if not hundreds more people including churches dating back before railroads even came through town
