Marion, Illinois is a small town in the Du Page County area of central Illinois. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Marion is located on a bend in the river known as the Chicago River. The settlement began as a small Indian village called Kankakee on or about 1812 by the Sauk people. The first white settler in Marion was James Wilkinson, who arrived in 1827 and built his cabin on what is now Elm Street. A year later, he married Rebecca Green and their son, Joseph Wilkinson, started farming there. In 1830, Captain Nathan Hale of the United States Exploring Expedition discovered coal deposits near Kankakee and recommended that settlers move to these fields to prospect for this valuable resource. Joseph Wilkinson took up this suggestion and purchased some land from Captain Hale for $100 cash. He and his wife then founded the town of Marion around this time with their two children as its first citizens. In 1831, Colonel John Haines established a military post at nearby Clearfield with 9 men (the nucleus of what would become US Cavalry troops). This outpost served as an important logistics stop for wagon trains carrying goods overland from eastern Illinois to Springfield before reaching Chicago via Rock Island Railroad yards south of Kankakee Junction. After Haines' death in 1840, his successor Colonel David Godfrey turned over control of Marion's military garrison to local farmers in 1842-43 without consulting Haines' widow or heirship . Reverend Forster Richards became pastor at Clearfield Methodist Church in 1850 after serving one year as pastor at Kankakee Methodist Church; he also helped found First Presbyterian Church (now part of Emmanuel AME Zion Baptist church) in downtown Marion on Elm Street just east of Main Street in 1855-56. A school district was organized which included most of present day DuPage County when it was created out of portions of Kane County (including parts now located within city limits) on November 3rd 1860 by Act No 93-3 Wabash Railroad Company Directors Fielding & Griggs - James Payson Dickson Mayor Robert Blyth... townships wereorganized based on boundaries set forth by act: Clark Township (northwest corner), Granite Township (east corner), Hardin Township (southwest corner), Miami Township (southeast corner), Ottawa Township (northwest corner), Putnam Township (southwest corner). On July 6th 1865 Union Pacific Railroad leased all schools within districts; each township had 2 schools: Clark School District #1 had 4 classrooms & Annex Building Hall; Granite School District #2 had 3 classrooms & Annex Building Hall; Hardin School District #3 had 1 classroom only & Depot building; Miami School District #4 had 5 classrooms (& Annex Building Halls); Ottawa School District #5 did not have any buildings... In 1870 Union Pacific Railway merged with IND railroad so all schools became IND signals... class sizes increased from 2 students per teacher to 4 students per teacher effective October 1st 1870... In 1886 consolidation caused many school districts to merge into larger ones including Clark/Granite/Hardin/Miami/Ottawa through mergers March 15th 1886

In 1847, a group of farmers in Marion, Illinois began to petition the government for land on which they could build a new home. The area then known as Union County was part of the Northwest Territory and, because of that, no public land was available to the farmers. One factor in the decision to settle in this area was its fertile soil and proximity to water supplies. The area also had an excellent climate, with warm summers and cold winters. In addition, there were numerous resources available such as timber and coal. The first settlers arrived in what is now Marion in 1848. They built their homes around a small pond called Duck Creek. By 1850, about 60 families had relocated to Marion from other parts of Northwest Territory. Over time, many more people moved into the area; by 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Marion County alone. The early residents of Marion were farming families who grew corn and beans along Duck Creek and mined coal near present-day Unionville. Coal mining started up slowly at first but quickly became an important industry in Marion due to its high quality (and affordable) coal products. From 1861 through 1865, Union County saw heavy fighting during the American Civil War thanks to General Ulysses S Grant’s efforts to expand his army across America via expansionist policies known as “the Great Migration” or “the Great Migration III” series of events that targeted southern sections of the United States seeking refuge from Reconstruction policies instituted after the Civil War ended (see American Civil War). These policies led many African Americans – including men who owned white slaves –to migrate northward into Northern states such as Ohio and Indiana where they could find work opportunities outside of slavery while still keeping their status as black Americans under control - something which was not possible south of Mason Dixon Line (see The American South). As a result, by 1865 most African Americans living within Union County had left for good or been forced out by military action or repression from state governments back East.[1] This period is notable for two reasons: First, it is when major changes occurred within both Union County itself [2]and secondly it is when one of America's earliest subdivisions happened: A town named duck creek after a small creek located just east side current day Duck Road[3][4], became established on what would become today's downtown core with some 3000 residents in 1870[5]. This growth can be attributed mostly to two factors: First being that railroad service minimized distance needed between farms/roadsides/cities &Second being thatdumpsters started developing 2ndhand goods businesses before trucks ever did!
The town of Marion was founded in 1848 by Col. John C. Lewis, a United States Army officer who served in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In 1870, the town had a population of just seventy-six people, but it grew quickly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its role as a transportation hub. In 1916, Marion became an incorporated village after being approved by the Illinois General Assembly. The village's first mayor was Mrs. Florence Hanks McNaught. In 1951, Marion voters passed an ordinance establishing a charter school district which helped to spur economic development in the town. By 2000, Marion had a population of over 1,000 residents and was home to two churches and several businesses.
