Macomb is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Macomb County. The population was 21,521 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren metropolitan area. The first European to discover what would become Macomb was Jean Nicolet, who landed on July 3, 1795, while sailing from St. Lawrence Island in Lake Huron to Grand Isle in present-day Michigan during his exploration of that territory for the French Company La Salle. He named it after his native home of Morbihan in Normandy, France." "In 1807, John Strode founded a gristmill on the west side of river Kawkawa about two miles southwest of modern-day downtown Macomb." In 1976, President Gerald Ford signed into law the Coast Guard Memorial Act which provided for establishment of the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C. The museum was dedicated in 1978 and contains artifacts and memorabilia related to the Coast Guard’s history and role in coastal defense. In 2002, Congress passed the Coastal Defense Appropriations Bill which directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a national coast guard program with an annual budget of $5 billion. DHS announced its intent to establish a coast guard force in 2006 and began construction on this program in 2009. The first operational unit was stationed at Seal Beach, California on November 1, 2011 and full funding for this project was approved by Congress on December 13, 2011. On January 15, 2013, DHS issued Executive Order 13327 which designated Commandant First Class Timothy L John “Tony” Boyle as Commander-in-Chief of USCGC San Diego (LHD-1). As Commander-in-Chief USCGC San Diego will become one of two USCG vessels based out of Guantanamo Bay Naval Base Cuba after being decommissioned from USCG CharlestonSC (LHD-2).

The first Europeans to visit the area now known as Macomb, Illinois were French explorers in the 16th century. The first permanent American settlers arrived in 1795, when a group of fur traders founded the town of Kaskaskia on the west bank of the Chicago River. By 1800, Kaskaskia had become an important trading center and was home to several mills that produced flour, cornmeal, and other goods for local marketplaces. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne arrived in Illinois with his army and built Fort Dearborn on the east side of the river near what is now Lombard Avenue. In 1815, General Wayne moved his garrison to Fort Dearborn and began construction on a new fortification that would become one of America's most celebrated military successes. The fortifications served as a strategic stronghold during the War of 1812 against British forces. In 1817, John Law made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a permanent settlement in what is now Macomb County while traveling through Michigan Territory. After years of exploration and travel, Law concluded that he could not find land suitable for farming in this region and returned home empty-handed in 1820. He resumed his exploration efforts two years later and discovered what would become Macomb County had he found successions of rich farmland within its boundaries.
