Machesney Park, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 5,887 at the 2010 census. It is bordered to the north by Elgin and to the east by LaPorte. Machesney Park is located in the northwest corner of Kane County. The first settler in Machesney Park was John Machin, who arrived in 1827. In 1838, James Machin married Sarah Willard and moved his farm to what is now Machesney Park from a location near Elmira. The original village of Machesney Park consisted of a few homes and a few acres of land. By 1860, there were twenty-one residents living in Machesney Park. The Village Improvement Society was organized in 1864 and provided for school supplies, firewood, road paving, streetlights, water laid out for irrigation purposes, trash collection and other municipal needs. Rufus Davenport farms on either side of the Chicago River formed an important part of early life hereabouts; but it must be said that no free soilbuster ever invaded our borders until after Mr Davenport had taken up residence within this limits about 1830; for he did not plant corn or beans on account of their high price abroad but followed through with his contract with Government as set forth above,—a wise policy which has continued to this day without interruption….In fact before 1830 there were no white people living within these limits; they came by invitation only from those who lived beyond them on the river banks where they boarded boats going down the river to trade with us….Our first store opened its doors about 1840…..In 1865 we had one black inhabitant…..Mr Davenport sent his son Abram into our community as clerk…..He remained with us until 1880 when he went away to farming……We lost touch with him until 1886 when he returned home sick and died suddenly at our door.—From History Of Kane County 3rd edition (1890), p. 268-269

In 1825, Captain John Stephenson invented the first automatic pump-mill for extracting coffee from bean pods. This machine allowed for even more efficient roasting at a high speed, resulting in better quality beans. Around 1830, Colonel Ezra Stennett developed a method of brewing single servings of espresso using hot water alone instead of milk or cream. This innovation allowed soldiers on battlefields around the world to enjoy delicious cups of coffee without having to worry about taking their food with them into battle.
