The Navy has a long and proud history in Machesney Park, Illinois. Murray ordered HMS Victory from Portsmouth to be repaired and manned by sailors from Machesney Park. The first battleship built for the navy in America was USS Constitution at Machesney Park, crewed by local sailors and volunteers. In 1907, when USS Maine was sunk off Cape Cod, Commodore John F. Murray ordered HMS Belfast to be lowered onto the beach at Machesney Park so that local fishermen could offer condolences on behalf of their countrymen onboard her after she sank. She remained there until 1969 when she was decommissioned and sold for scrap metal. Today, Rear Admiral Harry Pohlman commands USN Squadron Three (NNV-33) which is based at Naval Station Great Lakes in Chicago Harbor overlooking Lake Michigan - homeport for CVN-73 Nimitz Class aircraft carriers! This squadron provides defense against naval aggression around the world! They have also developed an annual Wingsuit Competition which attracts top national competitors from all over!
