The Lyons, Illinois Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services on the Great Lakes for over 100 years. On October 1, 1907, the Lyons station was established as a result of a merger between the former Burlington and Quincy stations. The new station was built on land donated by Samuel H. Yates who served as the first Treasurer of Lake Michigan from 1855-1861. The station was enlarged in 1915 and again in 1947 when it became part of the larger Chicago District. In 1953, the Lyons station shifted its operational headquarters to downtown Lyons after becoming embroiled in an incident where two men were shot at close range while guarded at the station. The Lyons Coast Guard Station was established on October 15, 1851. The station received its first grant of land from the United States Congress on November 3, 1851. The station was officially organized on December 1, 1852. The current coast guard building was built in 1935.

Lyons was platted on March 12, 1847 by George Washington Lyon and other investors from Chicago. The town was named for General Lafayette who fought in the American Revolution. The city of Joliet and its suburbs were annexed by Lyons in 1955 when Joliet became a non-metropolitan area within the Chicago metropolitan area. In 2007, the city of Lyons merged with neighboring Village of Geneva to form a new municipality with an overall population of 116,000 people. Lyons is located at (41.968009,-87.947748). It has a total area of , making it one of Illinois' smallest towns by landmass but one of its most populous cities with over 100,000 residents per square mile due to its large housing development density and high rate of job growth between 2000 and 2010. As of the 2010 census, Lyons had a population size greater than 100% for only three times: in 1900 when it had only 7 residents; in 1960 when it had over 50 residents; and again in 1990 when it reached 107,046 people

The city reached its peak population size of 3,000 people in 1991 but then began to decline; however it has since regained some of its former levels of activity.
