Loves Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was named for Edwin Loves, who donated land to the town in 1872. The first residents were farmers and their families who lived on what is now Main Street. They built a log cabin on the lot in 1874. A post office called Loves Park was established in 1875 and remained in operation until 1930. A candy store and restaurant opened in 1903 and became Loves Park Tavern; it closed in 1966 but reopened as the Pequod Lounge later that year. In 1935, Mrs. John Hargrave Wayman donated land to the town which became known as "Hargrave Woods". The first schoolhouse was built there in 1923 and remained operational until 1959 when it was replaced by a new school building which served as both schools for adults as well as high school from 1965 until 1990 when it burned down; this event also marked the end of an era for Loves Park where only boys were allowed to attend high school (the girls had attended local schools). For many years after that, all high school students attending nearby South Side High School took classes at Hargrave Woods instead. In 1990, Love's Park Elementary School moved from its original location on Wabash Avenue to its current location on Western Parkway because of overcrowding at South Side High School thanks to renovations funded by Mayor Richard Mangel with help from then-Governor Dick Daley . This move saved Love's Park from closure but did not re-instate girls into male-only attendance like had been planned before; instead, Love's Park Elementary remains coeducational today while South SideHigh continues to serve grades 9 through 12 as an all-girls institution.
Loves Park was once a small town in the far northcentral Illinois county of McHenry. It was named for Samuel Loves, who owned a farm there in 1839. The post office was established in 1847, and it operated until it was discontinued in 1957.
