Lombard is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lombard was founded by Italian Americans in 1849 and named after Lombardy, Italy. The first post office was established in Lombard in 1851. The town rapidly grew through annexation of adjacent municipalities during the mid-19th century. By 1870, Lombard had a population of 30 residents and functioned as a small village with its own school and library. In 1881, Lombard became a city under the provisions of the Illinois Municipal Act No. 9 of that year; it incorporation took place on December 14 that year. The city's rapid growth came to an end following World War II when most of the industry which had supported its growth died away due to automation or other replacements. However, since then there have been several new businesses arrive and grow within City limits including air travel service provider DFW Metro Airlines (now Delta Air Lines), real estate development company One57 Communities LLC (now Two Harbors Realty) as well as several medical technology companies such as Medtronic and Abbott Laboratories (now Abbott). Today Lombard has become one of the thriving communities within Kane County due to its diversity both economically and racially speaking with over fifty percent being white while thirty percent are minority group from various racial backgrounds alone making it one of largest demographic minorities in Kane County according to 2010 Census data Additionally this concentration does not reflect any percentage for ethnicity given that all races make up just over seventy percent of body politic representation in City Council Races across five wards currently represented by Mayor Toni Preckwinkle who represents District 1 & 2 only

Lombard, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,824 at the 2010 census. Lombard was founded by Italian Americans in 1847 as part of the Chicago area. It became an agricultural center and industrial center during thelate 19th century. In 1963, Lombard became a city after being merged with neighboring Marengo Township. The first occupants of what is now Lombard were farmers who came to the area from Rome in 1847. They built a few homes and started farming but it was not until 1892 when there was an organized effort to create a town in this region that led to the founding of Lombard." (Wikipedia) The first settler in what is now Lombard was Francesco Amedeo Caracciolo who arrived on October 12th, 1847 from Rome with his family. He had come for religious reasons only and did not have any landettlement plans or intentions other than staying where he found himself- however things changed quickly when he saw an opportunity to improve prospects for future settlers close by." (Cook County Historical Society) In 1848 another group of Italians moved into what is now Lombard from DuPage County- this time under contract with the General Land Office to purchase 640 acres ofania near present day Lombartown Road and Main Street...They named their new community Giuseppe Emiliano Village after their leader Emiliano Tulpi who had donated some land along these roads back in 1848." (Cook County History) However due to economic factors many Italians abandoned Giuseppe Emiliano Village within 3 years because they could not get workable farmland anywhere else." (Cook County History) Italian American descendants continue living and voting here today despite difficult times throughout much of recent history." (Wikipedia) After years of hard work by various groups including themselves, mechanics' union members formed a labor pool which bought 160 acres east of Present Day Morse Road for $6 per acre" (Morse Club website). This land would become known as “The Farm” which still stands today on Center Street across from Lions Park...This group purchased more land over time including 100 acres on Park Avenue between North Western Road and Morse Rd., making it home to what is now called “the original village”...In 1893 James Dolan founded Dolan's Gaseous Paper Mill on East Touhy Street adjacent to The Farmsteads)."(Fenwick's Directory Of Chicago Businesses 1886-1906 pg 128) By 1895 there were over 150 businesses located in downtown Lombardy with over 1,200 residents" (Fenwick's Directory Of Chicago Businesses 1886-1906 pg 128)"
