Lombard is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,567 at the 2010 census. Lombard is the largest municipality in Cook County by area and fourth-largest city in Illinois. It is also the largest city in Northwestern Illinois. Lombard was founded as a result of the 1851 purchase of land from the Peoria Indians by George Norton and his brothers. The first buildings were built on this land, including a log cabin that still stands today on North Park Avenue. In 1857, Mayor John Hickey established a street grid for Lombard. That same year, Lombard became part of the new county of Cook when it was created from parts of Wayne and Macon counties. In 1865, Samuel Morse donated land to build a school in Lombard. This school eventually became Lombard University which has been continuous since its founding in 1870 with over 120 departments and several thousand students. The university's main campus is located just south of downtown on Market Street between Michigan Avenue and State Street where it meets Interstate 80 (northwest side). The following year saw an influx of people into town when railroad construction started nearby on what would become Chicago's Central Overland Railroad (COPR). This transportation Revolution brought many people to Lombard who began purchasing property hereabouts to build homes or businesses which soon filled up the streetscape with grime and dust indicative of early 20th century America: everything had not yet changed so much since Europeans had first landed in what is now Illinois more than two centuries earlier! The railroads stopped operations around 1920 but left their tracks visible throughout downtown - one can still see evidence along Michigan Ave., State St., Ludlow Rd., S Euclid Ave., W Addison Ave., N Dearborn St., E First St & N Prairie St that once ran perpendicular to each other like fingers inside out! As development continued through World War II (1939-1945), Lombartown – home to most notably American Motors Corporation – grew rapidly thanks largely to its location near I-80/I-94 interchange and easy access to both vehicular traffic as well as services available within walking distance such as restaurants, pharmacies etcetera... After World War II ended there were smaller waves of migration beginning around 1950s with newlyweds moving into larger subdivisions closer to job opportunities instead of commuting hours away; however most residents have remained constant since then - living close enough so they can easily walk down each block or take public transportation but far enough away so they don't feel squeezed between jobs or neighborhoods
