The first post office was established in Lombard on February 11, 1847; it closed on October 5, 1853. In 1860, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a cavalry raid through rural Cook County and into Lombard. The resulting skirmish left four men dead and twenty-two wounded; this event became known as "The Battle of Lombard". In 1863–1865, during American Civil War: Lombard served as both an outpost on Union Side's Great Western Railway between Carbondale and Peoria Junction (now Bettendorf), Illinois and as supply depot for General Douglas MacArthur's army at Decatur Junction near Joliette (now Rockford). On November 12th 1865 Confederate Lieutenant John Pemberton ambushed three columns of Union troops retreating from Fort Donelson after successful assaults against two other Ulysses S Grant's army corps under John McClernand that had been attacking Fort Donelson since September 15th 1865; five flags were captured along with seventy-six prisoners taken including several officers including Brigadier General Edwin Vandal Johnson who later became Commandant of Hurlburt Field Military Academy

In 1933 two new varieties were developed called Sumatra Kopi Dulit and Tanjung Pinang Kopi Tahanan which became very popular due to their smooth flavor profile with notes of sweet spices like ginger, cinnamon or cloves. These new coffees continued to be produced until 1975 when production was halted due to World War II bombings that destroyed many factories across Java. In 1949 Indonesia made an agreement with United States whereby American companies could produce about 50% of all Indonesian coffee while Indonesians produced the rest using manual labor methods. This system continued until 1966 when electric processing machines were introduced followed by automatic grinding operations which increased yields by up to 60%. After 1976 most production stopped as supermarkets refused to buy products made without manual labor because those techniques did not meet their standards for quality assurance or taste. As a result, much older varieties such as Sumatra Kopi Dulit continue to be grown but at lower yields than newer variety such as Tanjung Pinang Kopi Tahanan
