Lombard, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Micropolitan Statistical Area. Lombard is located at (38.970622, -88.528908). Lombard was founded in 1834 by John Love and his brother-in-law David Whitacre as a small farming community on the banks of the Des Plaines River east of Springfield. In 1872, Lombard became an incorporated village and in 1887 it became a city when its citizens voted to make themselves a municipality under the Illinois Municipal Code. In 1934, Lombard annexed neighboring towns of Northampton and South Holland; these towns had been separate villages since before 1834. Assembling all three municipalities made Lombard one of the most populous cities in Illinois with over 100,000 residents by 1960. The city's first mayor was George Wuerthman who served from 1934 until his retirement in 1960; he was succeeded by James J. McMahon II who held office for two terms before becoming City Manager from 1978 to 1984 under then-mayor Michael McDonald until his resignation effective January 1, 1985 due to health reasons which were later diagnosed as cancerous afterMcDonald died from this condition on October 8 that year at age 71 years old according to public records). Lombard is a city in Cook County, Illinois, located on the eastern border of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 37,814 at the 2010 census. Lombard has been a center of commerce and industry for generations, with manufacturing companies such as Cargill, Ford Motor Company and DeKleist Lubin Manufacturing Corporation headquartered there. In recent years Lombard has become known for its agricultural production; many large farms in the city are used to produce fruits and vegetables, cornmeal and other feed grains, soybeans and cotton. The first people who lived in what is now Lombard were Ebrary tribe members who settled there about 1800. A post office called "Lombard" was established in 1837, but no town grew up around it. A group of farmers led by Gustavus Kapp bought land east of present-day Lombard from the Ebrary tribe in 1854. They named their new community "Lombardsburg," after General John Wayne's headquarters at Little Big Horn near Mount Hood in Oregon during his 1856 military campaign against Mexico City's Mexican government. The name stuck and Lombard became a village when it had a population of about 150 people. In 1865, white men founded the Community School District No., 4 (later Cook County), which included present-day Lombard along with parts of Oak Park and Streamwood. The school district was designed to serve all residents living within two miles of its borders - something that wasn't possible until well into the 20th century because most residents lived more than two miles away from schools). It was also through this district that young Mr. Kenneth Wernick learned how to read when he was just three years old – an event that helped define his future career as a public servant. In 1881–82, Leland Stanford III donated land on which Stanford University would be built; today's Palo Alto Avenue runs through one side of Stanford Stadium across from where Wernick played football as a child while still attending elementary school before going on to attend college nearby (Wernick later served as president of Stanford University). With this donation came an obligation to build a university campus so that students could get an education without leaving their homes – something that eventually led to Silicon Valley's founding by computers pioneer Larry Ellison in 1984.) But even before Dennis Hastert became Speaker Of The House (and then soon after Chairman Of The House Republican Conference), momentum had been building for development around Lombard with several businesses opening up shop here over the past few decades or so: including Apple Inc.'s original retail store here between 1966-1971 followed by HP Pavilion Americas & Europe co-founder Meg Whitman's purchase/opening of her first store here back in 2000 (#1 popular tourist spot outside Chicago ever since!). And lastly but not least: Google LLC HQ moved out completely into Building 15 herein following their purchase/establishment back in 2005[1]! So it goes... throughout history various business owners have come & gone - each time creating some muchneeded spinoff activity closer to home for our community!
